Anyone know what level of body damage would fail a MOT?

DS2s car was damaged while parked. There is a bit of damage to the bumper- hit corner wise rather than straight on. It's been assessed and the body shop are now arranging to get it in for repair. It's fine to drive etc. Only issue is that the car is due it's MOT around the same time as it should be in for repair, plus DS2 is planning to come home from his Uni city about the same time. Original plan was for him to get the car MOT'd when here but the body shop repair will be in Uni city. I'm tempted to put off the body shop repair until he's been down here and had the MOT done but having googled it, you can fail an MOT with bumper damage if they feel it compromises safety. I know no-one can know without actually seeing the car and being an MOT experienced person but given that the body shop can't fit him in for 3 weeks anyway, I think it must be safe and therefore shouldn't fail for that on an MOT?

We need to contact the body shop re the booking in date anyway so maybe they will be able to shed a bit of light.

My rear bumper had a chunky scrape and slight warp for about the last 3 years of its life. Never even noted at MOT.

Thanks, that's really helpful. It has some scrapes and it's misaligned at the joint with the quarter panel (hit by a police car on a chase!) it wasn't a high impact collision (their car was also empty....). My car is also going in for a new bumper this week after I was rear ended at a roundabout last month - it's been a bit of a time - but my MOT will be done after the repair.

The bumper would need to be sharp or loose to fail. Basically if you hit a pedestrian with the damaged bumper would it cause more injury to them than an undamaged bumper would. If yes it would fail MOT, if no it would pass.

It's the rear bumper and no sharp edges so thinking we are probably good. I just like using my own trusted garage for servicing/MOT rather than trying to find one in the other city at a time when he might be down to the wire in terms of MOT expiry. I know we can do it early and retain the expiry date but we aren't in that window yet and DS is 2 and a half hours drive away from here.
