Winter fuel payments for pensioners scrapped

Unless they are in receipt of pension credit or other benefits.

I suspect this will be the first of many benefits which will be restricted as part of cost-cutting measures.

What else might we see / should we see?

My MIL and her DB definitely didn't need them, she was usually on cruise when the cold weather hit. But there will probably be older people not claiming what they are entitled to who will be hit.

If they were on a cruise they’d probably paid a heck of a lot more VAT than £200…they’d just be getting a little bit of a rebate!

MikeRafone · 29/07/2024 18:43

But when elections come round you must remember how much the Labour Party values those who came before and have done so much to make us who we are.

Why? did OAPs worry about what came after them when they voted tory for 14 years or voted to leave in their droves

I think this is fair. I'm related to a number of pensioners who definitely do not need this payment.

And I was looking forward to it.

Its a funny thing "older age". You never think its going to happen to you, until it does.

Absolutely agree. But it's that group of people just in the middle that will miss out.

Yes. I agree that this group of people need consideration.

To all the posters claiming that their parents don’t need it, then they’ll likely be the same parents that will have an estate likely be hit with inheritance tax rises. You’ll not be bothered then either will you?

No, my aunt is busy spending her estate on her care in her accommodation. She has no one to leave it to- it is left to charities. I am sure my uncle would have wanted her to look after herself. They sold their house 28 years ago and down-sized at 65 to a small rented house. She now lives in a 1 bedroomed rented flat with care available.

My PIL can do as they please- their money, not our business.

Have 4 lots of oldies in the extended family that we keep an eye on. The poorest one has two years of my salary in savings and more coming in each month than me.

I think it's reasonable.

Lots of pensioners have no savings.
just because the ones in your family will
be ok, doesn’t mean that all pensioners will be.

ClonedSquare · 29/07/2024 16:36

I think this is completely fair. My parents are separated and each live alone and mortgage free in a four bed house. No way do they need free money from the government to heat a house that's twice as big as they need. I'm sure plenty of older people are in the same situation.

You sound very envious!

This is a good thing.
DM gets fuel payments but her pension is as much as I earn!

They might give a discretionary pot to energy companies for this. Also check to see if your local council has a discretionary pot for other things like council tax. Might ease the burden a little.

What discretionary pot? When I lost my job during Covid, was totally broke and struggling to pay my bills, both my local council and energy company offered me loans. Racking up huge amounts of debt isn't a solution in my eyes.

Drizzlethru · 29/07/2024 18:45

Wonder if they will start restricting the free funded childcare hours to those whose both parents work (at 3 all children get 15hts) or to those on UC etc?
many wealthy families could pay for their hours. The ones who will be cruising and not need the money? Same with free school meals?

I really feel for the pensioners who are just an over credit level. Heating has risen so much in cost.

cruises are zero rated for VAT

TheWordWomanIsTaken · 29/07/2024 18:46

So if you haven't made enough NI conts to qualify for a full pension you get pension credits? Is that right?
So those that made the required payments or have sensibly saved don't get it is that it?
Seems bizarre that those who 'do the right thing' are punished again.
And lots on here braying for it on the basis that their mums and dads don't need it as though anecdote is data.
I think this is a disgusting decision and feel very sorry for any pensioner just over the threshold.

LBFseBrom · 29/07/2024 18:46

LuluBlakey1 · 29/07/2024 18:37

But she isn't assuming all pensioners are rich. She has said those on certain benefits like pension credit will continue to get it.

They will get the payment if born before 1957. I checked after reading this thread and that is the case.

Gall10 · 29/07/2024 18:46

Jaxhog · 29/07/2024 16:59

It's going to increase the number of pensions having to claim additional benefits, which will cost more in the long run (admin costs as well as payments). Some pensioners may not need it, but many do. But hey, pensioners don't vote Labour, so what do they care.

Pensioners don’t vote labour? Where the hell did you find this ridiculous fact?

That is sad, working enough for that takes years

Laughable.

I look like a harmless old granny but......

Rummly · 29/07/2024 18:47

Absolutely brilliant. Pensioners are the new Elon Musks and Lord Ashcrofts on MN.

👍

Noras · 29/07/2024 18:48

Well if they try to do anything with Carers allowance they will be in for a shock. Most of us caring for adult DC are just hanging in there. Most of us are wondering when to hand over to adult social care completely.

As it is the general advice is to push into independent living / full social services hours and any work you do as carer charge at the proper hourly rate.

The £82 per week is not great but it’s an acknowledgment for the many hours weekly.

I was just looking for this

I thought it was for pensioners on pension credit only. I still think that tbh. I don’t think mum’s age is going to make a difference.

Polythene · 29/07/2024 18:49

@TheWordWomanIsTaken yes, that's how I understand it. If you haven't paid enough NI over your working years, you don't get the full state pension so you get it topped up to the full amount by pension credit. And also qualify for a number of other schemes, like boiler repair, council tax support, winter fuel etc.

But if you've got your 35 years' contributions, you get state pension and that's it.

LindaDawn · 29/07/2024 18:49

Definitely fair! No OAP I know needs it.

There are some really spiteful people on this thread. What kind of person do you have to be to salivate in glee at the thought of pensioners being stripped of something as fundamental as money for heating their homes. For every so called "wealthy pensioner who doesn't need it" there will be several thousand others that live on a state pension and are on the poverty line...in some cases only a few pounds over the limit for qualifying for pension credit. I totally get that there are some that don't need it but there are others that absolutely do and they are being penalised and punished. I was revolted to see a post up the thread which suggested stripping pensioners of free prescriptions too...how about instead of degrading and pushing elderly vulnerable people into more abject poverty, we make the wealthy corps who dodge taxes pay their dues...how about before anyone claps their hands in delight at this revolting decision they think about the fact that this government just proved they are as despicable as the tories and if they come after the elderly and vulnerable who and what else are they going after as well....

Totally agree.

Edited

They won’t do this because they need people go out and work to pay for all of these things! Winter fuel payments, triple locks, social care, the NHS, the list goes on. All paid for by the taxes of working people. Giving them a bit of childcare help is literally the very least the state could do.
