Muslins - help, I’m going mad!

Need to buy a shed load of muslins. I only have experience of friends babies and their muslins being thinner than tea towels and any baby sick just instantly soaks through to your shoulder and the clothes you are wearing. What a re some thicker brands that give you a chance or soft or what do I need? Currently thinking a hand towel is more absorbant!

Old-fashioned terry nappies

I always folded mine in half and had them over my shoulder.

For DS 1 who was a very very sicky baby though I used huge muslin swaddles instead and folded them into quarters.

I quite like the small ones though because I used to just chuck them in the laundry when they got wet… I had 25.

Use tea towels if you want a thicker texture. Personally I'm a huge fan of thin muslins, we get through loads a day and they dry practically instantly. But I use tea towels a lot too!

I used small square terry towel nappies, but tried my best to keep them soft and fluffy in the early days. They're also good for the inevitable wees on the changing mat.

Lostworlds · 28/07/2024 19:24

I’m the exact same as @Mumoftwo1316
I fold my long muslins and love that they dry so quickly. I use tea towels a lot too, especially if I’ve just put my baby into his pjs and don’t want any milk spilling on him.

I found muslins totally pointless...had loads for both kids and never used them. Think i must be missing something!

Old-fashioned terry nappies

This. My mil gave me a load and I was a bit, meh, can't see a use for these, but they were invaluable, so useful for so many things

TemuSpecialBuy · 28/07/2024 19:27

i buy the giant muslins and use them folded in quarters so same size as a normal muslin but 4 x absorbance

also save yourself a load of hassle and buy some funky giraffe bibs. Life changing

TVRose · 28/07/2024 22:06

@TemuSpecialBuy what size is giant and any recommendations from where from?
Will have a look at Terry nappies thanks all.

I had a very sicky baby. I bought loads of cheap Ikea tea towels; they migrated to the kitchen drawer as he got older, and I'm still using them. He is now 18.

I still have some giant muslins and use them as hair wraps. The rest of the thinner muslins have been demoted to the rag box now.

ALunchbox · 29/07/2024 01:19

Does your child get sick though? You may not need any. I'd wait if I were you. We ended up buying lots of stuff which turned out to be completely pointless (incl. Muslins)

TVRose · 30/07/2024 20:40

@Buzzsaw thats what u thought, most of them seem too thin to do anything!
@ALunchbox no idea yet!

@eddiemairswife @OhLookAnotherDay @Justcallmebebes you are all bloody geniuses! I ordered a load of bamboo Terry nappy squares and they are going to be far more useful than muslins! Actually absorbant if sicked on and so stupidly soft. Genius.
