Big birthday

My child is 13. I have a mum who lives miles away and sibling who is even further away, so I'll be celebrating my big 50 soon with a small group of friends and my lovely boy.

I've booked a table for lunch. It'll be nice but fairly low key for various reasons. Anyway, if you have been in this position have you bought your own cake? Is that a bit tragic?

I'd like a cake but not sure if my friends will organise one.

Feel a bit sad about how life turned out but that's probably another thread entirely 🙈

I think, as an adult, you have to assume you'll sort your own birthday celebrations out, usually. What you've planned sounds nice 🎂

I agree you should expect to sort out your own birthday celebrations, regardless of age as an adult.

Low key sounds ideal- I don't myself do this nonsense of large so-called 'big birthday' celebrations. Another way to try to persuade you to spend more money.

check if they let you take your own cake to the restaurant because of allergies etc.
also they might let you cut it but not eat it (that happens where I work)

Oh good. Just wasn't sure if it seemed a bit silly or something. But a cake is nice I think.

One friend is someone who makes cakes but I wouldn't assume. I suppose if she does one and I get one too, then I'll just have a lot of cake I suppose.

@LlynTegid thanks. I like your no-nonsense! You're right.

I'd probably just save it for home rather than the restaurant perhaps. Thank you though. Good point.

Def buy a cake but tell your friends you have done so you don’t end up with two.

Have a lovely birthday 🎁

sesquipedalian · 28/07/2024 17:46

If you have a friend who makes cakes, why don’t you ask if you can pay her to make you one? Either she says yes, or she says, Well, I was going to make you one anyway - but you will then be sure of having a cake without the worry of duplication.

OuchIsLife · 28/07/2024 17:56

Buy your own cake. Treat yourself to a gift that you want. It is definitely not tragic to take control, treat yourself and meet you own needs! It means you're sorted!

Have a great birthday!

bananaboats · 28/07/2024 18:24

Defo buy yourself one! You could always check with the restaurant first but I've never known it to be an issue.

StormingNorman · 28/07/2024 18:57

Asking your friend is a great idea. Maybe she can work with your son on it so that you get a surprise when it comes out?
