I am in need of new cutlery.
Classic design, no plastic or wooden bits, definitely going in the dish washer.
I have read that stainless steel 18/10 will be the most hard wearing.
Ideally I would like 8 place settings, but will buy 6 if I can add.
I don't want any weird shaped pieces, oddly designed handles, things like that.
I have been looking on line, but some places won't send out knives!
Longevity is important, I hate replacing things!
Do you have any recommendations, please?

Delphigirl Thank you - those are exactly the designs I am looking for.
The first is 18.0, and I have decided on 18.10, so I am going to phone to ask about the Fiddle patten, as that does not say in the description.

Our Ikea cutlery has gently rounded handles, stainless steel, dishwasher safe, sturdy and still looks brand new after nearly 20 years. I'm so surprised but I love it.

Thank you, TheYoungestSibling ,
I will take a look.
I bought some from Lakeland to 'tide me over' and it's absolute rubbish, rusting and staining. The few bits of Oneida I have left are over 40 years old, with not a mark on them, but bits have disappeared.
By the way, I can recommend Kitchen Devil. Had my bread knife over 40 years, and it has been used as a saw, notably on the christmas tree, and for lots of odd jobs - rarely for bread!

Have a look at Robert Welch or Arthur Price

TenarAtuan · 28/07/2024 09:58

OP I would recommend the brand Oneida, which Debenhams used to sell. We've a set we had as a wedding gift 25years ago, which is sadly missing a few bits (where does it go?) and good as new with everyday usage. I can see amazon sell some but like you, i need to hold it to see if it meets requirements!!

We got cheap stuff from Argos some time in the 1990s and it's still going strong, all dishwashered several times a week. Similar to this, but not branded and probably the cheapest available, likely about a tenner for a set of 4 x 4 as we had very little money at the time:

In the absence of plastic or wooden handles, it'll likely last forever, cutlery isn't really something that needs replacing. It's more likely you'll get bored of it, or see something else you like, but can't justify, because you already have perfectly good cutlery.

Thank you for your answers, I think I am going to have to visit some department stores, because I need to hold it.
Bjorkdidit - my cutlery has been disappearing into a black hole - I do not understand it. I have mix and match cutlery, and not always match!

Fenwicks in Canterbury is fairly near, but also Hoopers in Tunbridge Wells.
John Lewis is at Bluewater, they will not send out cutlery!
Hopefully they will have some of the brands recommended here.

I second the recommendation that Delphigirl posted in your first reply. I’ve had a set by Charingworth for 8 years, in daily use and always diswashered. They look like new. Heavy (but not too heavy). Would happily buy from them again.

OliveTheaBough · 28/07/2024 12:59

I got a really nice, heavy set from Tesco- not their big standard but their quality household range (can’t remember the brand name) and I really rate it.

Sgtmajormummy · 28/07/2024 13:04

I always look here for household goods, even just to work out the best prices.

Our Robert Welch still looks great after 13 years.

Have you got a TK Maxx nearby? I've bought our last couple of sets of cutlery from there. Still going strong, and look as good as new, after 15 years.

Won't John Jewis let you collect from a Waitrose local to you?

Salter from TK max - they were on offer and simple design in stainless - about £17
