Eyelid twitch - any ideas to stop it?

For about a week now, one of my eyelids is fluttering involuntarily for a few seconds. It's every few minutes or so the whole time I'm awake.

As well as being very annoying and making me feel like I'm in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, it affects my vision so I've been avoiding driving.

Has anyone successfully made a twitch like this go away?

My lower eyelid did this recently for 4 weeks. Eventually stopped!

Botox injections around the eyes are the treatment for Hemifacial spasm, which is a rare neurological condition that generally starts with an eye twitch. It certainly doesn't stop it in its tracks it works for a few weeks to calm that's all.

I really wish I hadn't googled hemifacial spasm!

I developed this a few years ago due to stress and anxiety but it seemed to happen after I had drunk coffee. Cutting down on caffeine helped so you could give that a try.

@Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice don't google! I did and was convinced this was my life now with a dodgy eye twitch

It's gone. I tried magnesium, cutting down caffeine etc and it just went by itself

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 29/07/2024 07:07

I've taken supplements (magnesium and a multi) morning and night since posting this thread and it really seems to be helping. The twitch hasn't gone yet but it's barely noticeable. Thanks everyone.

I get this when I’m either really tired or really stressed. I’ve had it last for a few weeks before and it was very annoying! The doctor told me to reduce caffeine and make sure I was getting enough vit d, b12 and magnesium and it would eventually stop. Having dry eyes can cause it too so you might need eye drops.
for more extreme cases where it lasts for months without getting any better, an injection of Botox in the eyelid muscle will stop it in its tracks

Exactly the same for me... moments of extreme stress. I cut alcohol, caffeine, took magnesium and tried to make sure I slept a lot. It does pass, but it's quite horrible in the moment

You can buy heated eye masks on Amazon which will help.

Eddielizzard · 29/07/2024 09:38

I had it for about 18 months due to stress and tiredness. Got rid of it by stopping caffeine and making life changes.

This also helped in the moment: if you focus on something in your peripheral vision it helps calm your mind. When you're stressed and the tic happens, your focus becomes narrow because your body thinks you're under stress. So by focussing on periphery you're tricking your mind into thinking the stress has passed. Weird, but works for me. Has the same effect as deep breathing.

I get it when I've had too much caffeine.

I really wish I hadn't googled hemifacial spasm!

It is extremely rare, and bloody annoying.

systemicmotivations · 29/07/2024 09:56

I used to get it a lot. I upped my water intake significantly and reduced caffeine overall, those both helped loads. I'd start there rather than jumping into supplements or Botox 😉

Polyethyl · 29/07/2024 09:58

I was cursed with this for months once. It was cured by getting a different job.
Good luck.

Trauma, stress and exhaustion brings my twitch back.

Proper rest and relaxation fixes it

watchingsmurfs · 29/07/2024 10:07

Ugh! This is the worst. I had one for over two weeks! I took magnesium supplements and it stopped.

Smallngrumpy · 29/07/2024 10:34

Have you tried an eye mask that you put in microwave for few seconds. On eyes for 10 mins til cool then a gentle eye massage.
I bought mask from Amazon and got massage instuctions with it. My eye twitch went away in a few days but need to do occasionally to keep at bay . Mine is caused by dry eyes but also i spend lots of time staring at screens and my sleep is awful.

I already drink loads of water and am not giving up my 1 cup of coffee a day, so supplements it is 😊

Sugarspice, one cup of a coffee a day, preferably in the morning, will not hurt you one bit.

I don't know if increasing rest is going to be possible, but I hear you all loud and clear and will do my best. Thank you.

I dont think you really have a choice. As someone who ignored this kind of warning sign, if you don't take some rest now your body will force you to rest soon.

Magnesium supplements work for me when I get random twitches

I was going to suggest magnesium too
