D&V on holiday

So we are due to go away in 2 weeks - all inclusive to Spain. According to trip advisor the hotel has an outbreak of D&V. Any advice?

I'd assume (and hope) that it would all be under control by then and the hotel would have been deep cleaned etc. But when I think of the logistics about how they deep clean it with a hotel full of ill people then I'm not entirely sure I'd feel comfortable going.

Any option to change hotel?

If you booked through an agent see if you can change hotels. If you didn't, speak to your insurer and see if they will cover the cost of a hotel change.

If you can't change the booking and you go to the hotel, take Boots antiviral hand foam. It's different to antibacterial gels and also deals with noro. Don't eat from buffets. Hopefully two weeks is long enough for the hotel to get on top of the problem

Take plenty of Immodium and get some hand gel. Try not to touch communal things like lift buttons, but if you have to, hand gel. But I’m sure they’ll have it under control by then.

I'd definitely be avoiding the buffets 🤢

In addition to the above

  • don’t have ice in drinks, if possible order drinks that have to be opened by you such as individual cans or cartons.
  • If drinking water, make sure it come in individual bottles/cans and use an antibac wipe to clean the top of the container or drink with a straw - take your own straws with you and wash them regularly with hot soapy water/rinse with boiling water from kettle in you room (if you have access to one)
  • don’t eat salads or sandwiches which may have been prepared in the hotel or order from room service where you can’t see how food is stored/displayed
  • eat out of the hotel where possible
  • use your own bathroom during the day rather than those in the hotel lobby or near the pool area
  • as well as Imodium take rehydration sachets with you and a pack of antibac wipes to wipe down your room’s light switches, lamps, tv remotes and door/window handles.
  • use little finger/elbow to press button to call lifts. If walking down stairs and holding handrails, take paper towel/a tissue and use that to hold it.
  • wash hands regularly with hot water and soap and use an anti viral foam like the one Boots sell.

Unfortunately it’s everywhere at the moment, my adult son was on a cruise last month, boarding was delayed as the ship had to have a deep clean. The family in next cabin got it after 3 days and they were confined to cabin the rest of the cruise. Try and only use your room toilet if you can and hopefully if you have a buffet it will be served to you by staff, not letting people serve themselves. Really good hand washing and try and prevent putting your fingers in mouth, hand gels aren’t as good. Take some Imodium.

As someone with emetophobia this is my worst nightmare.
This would ruin the holiday for me before I'd even arrived. You can't enjoy your holiday by having to do all of the above, dodging germs.

Thanks for the advice - hotel cancelled and booking an Air BnB
