Detox whilst on holiday

About to go away two weeks all inclusive. Normally holidays is cocktails and reading, quick splash and o cool off but then back to sunbed. Eat whatever I fancy and enjoy.

have been feeling unfit and sluggish lately. Have also gained a lot of weight and been quite depressed . The hotel has two very large pools and a well equipped gym with classes.

wouldni be mad to try and and get healthy (mind and body) over the holiday. Not to an extreme just treat as reset. Or, holiday as usual and wait till I’m back!

I like the idea of a reset but I wouldn't be able to resist the temptation while away

Where are you going to? Do you know if there are any nice clean/healthy restaurants? We were in Spain in June and there was yoga on the beach - anything like that happening where you are going?

LightFull · 27/07/2024 15:55

We went AI last year and I swam all day every day except on excursions I was walking around a lot then

I didn't go crazy with alcohol and I ate loads of delicious freshly cooked fish and meat with veg

I love fresh healthy foods anyway especially cooked by someone else

I did enjoy my ice cream and of course o did drink alcohol just not like it was going out of style

LightFull · 27/07/2024 15:57

Anyway suffice it to say I did come back feeling healthier and didn't put on weight

So yes it's easily achievable

ComealongMartha · 27/07/2024 15:58

I tend to be much healthier on holiday and do a mini detox. I feel less like I’m missing out than I would at home for some reason.

LightFull · 27/07/2024 15:58

No way would I be going to the gym though

I do love aqua aerobics on holiday though if I manage to not miss it because it just makes me smile because it's a bit bonkers

LightFull · 27/07/2024 15:59

Honestly just swim a lot and float on a lilo you'll feel happy, fitter and relaxed

DominiqueBernard · 27/07/2024 15:59

If you like exercising, then use the pools and gym whenever you want. I'd also say make the most of the healthy foods available, but you will also need to rest and reading on a sunbed certainly sounds like part of a healthy holiday. If you like cocktails and or there are particularly delicious foods that you want to enjoy on holiday, have them in moderation.

Whale80ne · 27/07/2024 16:00

It'll depend a lot on who you're going with - if you're going on your own or with just your (fairly independent but not yet drinking age) offspring it should work well. If you're going with a partner or friends with whom you usually drink alcohol and eat lots as your mutual way to enjoy yourselves together it will be very difficult and cause potential conflicts, so you should probably get them on-side before you go if you want a fighting chance of sticking to your plan without falling out.

I think it could be really good if it works for you.

I'm often healthier on holiday because it's easier to eat well when someone else is cooking, far less quick UPF fixes at the end of a busy, stressful day. Plus there's more time for gym classes/swimming/walking/yoga when you're not working.

EmmaStone · 27/07/2024 16:46

I'm another who is often healthier on holiday, as I've got the time and opportunity to swim/gym etc, food selections are often delicious fresh fruits and veg, lovely seafood. I'm not a massive drinker though, so nothing really to 'detox' for me in that respect.

Doggymummar · 27/07/2024 16:48

I went to Greece earlier in the year and came back lighter. I had two alcoholic drinks in that time drank 4 litres of water daily. Swam daily and ate healthier than I do at home. No reason why you can't too.

peebles32 · 27/07/2024 22:26

I have stopped drinking recently and not told anyone. I go on holiday with friends in two weeks and all our children. I intend to have a good time and loads of swimming.
They are all big drinkers but I will just take myself off when I have had enough.
I am looking forward to feeling fresh on holiday for a change and not nursing a hangover.

mindutopia · 27/07/2024 22:30

Definitely do it. Not so much a ‘detox’ but I got sober last year and my first holiday was when I was only 4 weeks in.

Instead of all day drinking and staying up late and feeling hungover, I didn’t drink, ate healthy, went to the spa, long hikes and sea swims. Dh and I actually talked to each other and relaxed. It was the best holiday I’ve had in years. I genuinely cried because I didn’t want to come home. I came home feeling great and well rested and didn’t feel like I needed a holiday after my holiday.

CbeeGeeBee · 10/08/2024 09:40

I always try to do this on holiday. I don’t really drink so the lure of all inclusive beer/wine holds no attraction. Last time we went to Sardinia I can back with slimmer legs from all the walking and swimming. It’s really easy to pick lean meat or fish options on holiday. Greek yoghurt, eggs and fruit for breakfast. Just limit the desserts!

Noshferatu · 10/08/2024 09:43

That might work really well! You’ll be away from usual prompts / triggers and everything will be new. Just the job for a fresh take on things. And mornings will feel amazing, with a new gym and pools to play in and someone else makes the food for you too

Sunnyside4 · 10/08/2024 10:31

Could you aim to make better choices (which long term will help you greatly if you continue), so you have a few treats and can be flexible with whoever you're with, ie swimming, more walking on holiday to enjoy the local sights or some sort of sporty activity for a bit of fun? Foodwise, maybe some fruit you don't often eat here, either with yogurt for breakfast or as a nice snack. Eating out, try local fish and salads that are available.
