I was by far the biggest in the room, I weigh 23 stone 2. They’ve told me my target weight is 12 stone, and said a lot of stuff about syns. I’ve been obese for the majority of my life, since early childhood, morbidly obese since I was a teenager.

I’ve come home and cried, because I don’t think I can do this. They shout out everyone’s losses in front of a room full of strangers, the majority who don’t look like they need to lose a thing. I’m an emotional eater, I’m also on meds that cause a weight gain (given to people with anorexia to stimulate diet apparently).

I’m almost dreading going back already, I don’t know if I can be as strict as they’re saying - it would mean not eating the vast majority of my daily diet (ie, it looks like you fill up on fruit, veg, and stuff full of artificial sweeteners/low fat?)

I’m desperate for something to work because I’m massive but I’m terrified if I gain weight will they all pull me to bits for it?

Slimming world is toxic and causes eating disorders please think carefully about if it's the best thing for you

Persiancouscous · 28/07/2024 15:03

Think positively, you say others don't need to lose weight- a bit judgemental but hey if that's the case, you will be losing big numbers in comparison to them.

I'm not trying to sound mean, but it feels like the excuses are coming before you've even tried it. Everyone is there because they are insecure about their weight / bodies.

I'm on steroids and gives you an awful appetite, have disabilities that mean I can't exercise as much as others, etc. But, I'm still a healthy bmi... its bloody hard but you need to stop being so negative. Have you had therapy? Changing your diet / exercise are steps towards positive eating but mindset is also a huge factor.

When I joined we were asked what we wanted to set as a target and told our ideal weight we could choose anything over 10%.
We could also ask not to have losses called out, or just you've lost or a simple well done. You could ask for private chats too.
Your consultant should have given you her number so call her Monday for a chat.
What is your normal foods

You don't have to do this. Save all the bother and buy yourself some Mounjaro. You haven't got to the weight you are now through ignorance of what's healthy for you I'm sure, and SW is like torture. Obesity management has moved on from the bad old days, it's all much easier now, more progressive, more understanding. Get yourself on the weight loss injections board.

And may anyone who tells you to eat less, move more drown in a puddle of mullerlight.

How eating can lots of food be torture? I love pasta, rice and potatoes eating it is fine by me what do you want to eat?

Soditsally · 28/07/2024 16:02

My SW group is nothing like that

We choose our own target
We celebrate any loss and shame no one
No one makes anyone cry
We don't eat any crap full of saccharine
We share tips of how to make healthy food taste as good as possible maximising fresh veg, salad , fruit and protein
We don't gorge on Muller lights or anything else
It's fun , it's supportive and works well for me
We have lots of members from 14 to 84 years old
They are between 9 and 21 stone - I know because I help on the scales

I advocate for that any day over that twat RH mentioned earlier in thread
Good luck OP

I did slimming world online and lost lots of weight through, which I've kept off. It does work, but if you hate the group, then online might be more suitable!

mintich · 28/07/2024 16:43

Forgot to add, I didn't actually attend a group, I just went straight to online. However my frownd went to a group and loved it! She said everyone was too worried about their own weight to worry about everyone else.

itsgoingtobeabumpyride · 28/07/2024 16:55

I did slimming world a couple of times, I still use slimming world recipes now.
Don't be put off, you will find loads of support there, you're all in the same boat even though you're all different sizes.
I found the syns confusing too so I just avoided them at first then bought a couple of the books.
I preferred the green days to the red days (do they still do that?)
Don't give in, I hated the reading out of the weight loss but started to look forward to it once the weight started coming off, I was slimmer of the week twice!!
I also wore the same sort of outfit to the sessions so I didn't add additional weight by wearing heavy clothes, crazy right?
Once I stormed out because I'd put on 1lb 😄
Funny thing was, as I got to know people, it came out that we were all having some form of takeaway after our meeting as we then had a week to lose any additional weight.
Don't give up op, don't be put off by the target weight, keep going.
Update us and good luck

Nooooooo. You shouldn't be going somewhere where they shout out losses. That's not on.

I've been to NHS classes and SW over the past 10yrs and that has happened NEVER.

Can you find another class/group? Or ask your surgery about weight loss classes?

You're so amazing for making a decision to address your health, you absolutely do NOT need to be part of a competition each week.

SW is almost a MLM, ditto WW.

Ask at your doctors surgery and they'll be able to sign post you. There is also an app called Gloji which is the same as the NHS classes but virtually.

You've totally got this, hooray for making the first step! I'm 16st btw, also working on it!

Deathraystare · 30/07/2024 16:36

Don't beat yourself up over it! There will be times when you will lose quite a few pounds and other times when even though you think you have done well, nothing shifts or worse, you gain! Do they still encourage people to keep food diaries? I found this very helpful. If you are struggling, fill one out and show it to the leader. Sometimes I was told I needed to eat more! At the time I did it, it was advised to eat more SS super slimming foods and more fibre but I was doing the green one and I think it has changed.

Ask the leader if you can be weight in secret if you are concerned of people knowing. They will do this. Basically if you have a 'bad' day try to do better tomorrow. Don't give up!!! Just concentrate on eating proper food not the instant mash pizza base thing they use to talk about. Gross! You may find it easier to eat more protein (and veg) and less pasta and rice and potatoes.

Deathraystare · 30/07/2024 16:38

Funny thing was, as I got to know people, it came out that we were all having some form of takeaway after our meeting as we then had a week to lose any additional weight

My SIL and Brother used to do this after their class and go once a week for a ' pig out' at an Indian!!

Wherearetherabbitsgone · 30/07/2024 16:41

I joined just under 4 weeks ago too OP and cried after my first meeting because of the amount I have to lose.

It helps filling out the food diary every day to see where you are going right and wrong. I lost a stone so far in the first 3 weeks.

Moier · 30/07/2024 16:48

SW has been scientifically proven not to work.
The late Dr Mosely condemned it a cult.
Over 80% leave.. put weight back on and then go back.
50% end up with an eating disorder.
I started Mounjaro last week .. lost half a stone in first week.
No side effects but l am type 2.
My daughter has lost over two stone in 12 weeks.
Had my 2nd jab last night.. and usually would eat a full bowl of granola for breakfast.. was fill half way through.
I go swimming once a week ( might start going twice) slow lane swimming.. met three ladies my size all started mounjaro..
