Should we postpone potty training?

And try again in a few weeks?

I have a 23 month old son who was showing signs of being ready to use the potty. He liked sitting on it with clothes on or off, knew what it was for, copied us when we went to the toilet - flushing, washing hands etc - and could tell us when he was going/gone/needed to go.

Yesterday was day 1, but when he got up, as soon as i mentioned the potty he ran to get a nappy out and refused to sit on the potty. No problem, we just carried on as normal but left him without any clothes on. 2 accidents in the morning, no problem again just cleaned it up without fuss and said next time we can try the potty. It got to nap time without any wees on the potty but he peed as soon as I put his nappy on, then pooed while he was asleep (he does poo during naps usually anyway). He had been sitting on the potty here and there throughout the day with lots of praise for doing so but I suspect he was holding his wee in. Didn’t do any more wees until he had a shower at bed time, and he leaked through in the night so again he must have been holding it in.

This morning has been much the same. Is it normal and we should persevere or is it time to call it a day and try again another time? I don’t want him to hold his pee or hate the potty forever.

I feel awful if I’ve missed a window or started him too soon!

Thanks for any advice!

Both my dc potty trained at 2 years 10 months and we were in the middle with some friends training just before or just after. It was the perfect age for them and did it with no issue. One friend who trained early was still having accidents at 5 and 6 years old.

You haven't missed the window. They key is control. If your little one doesn't wake up to go to the loo/potty he's not quite there yet. I wouldn't rush it.

My DS was very nearly 3 but when he was clean and dry that was it day and night.

I would give it a bit more time to be honest, it’s only been a day? With my 2 year old, we decided to give it a proper go for 10 days and then take a call. Lots of accidents for a week but then it just clicked on day 8 and she’s been fine ever since.

Thanks everyone! Sorry I didn’t get any notification emails 🙃
We had a few dribbles on the potty yesterday but I think he is still holding it until shower/bedtime so will give it a few more days and see how we get on!
Have got Oh Crap podcast on audible and listening to it in pieces.
Thank you
