Who has a bungalow and loves it?

I’ve spent the past 20 years in a three story house. It was ridiculous big and I hated it. Couldn’t keep up with the house work and was a nightmare to be honest.

I’ve moved in to an apartment with the kids and I love it. Just waiting for the house to sell due to divorce/sort settlement out and I’m really really thinking of buying a bungalow.

Everything is on one floor, easier to clean, no faffing stairs.

A couple of friends have laughed and said I’ll be like a pensioner but I honestly don’t care!

Where are all the bungalow enthusiasts?!

Round my way bungalows are expensive for floor area, and I think stairs keep you fit.
(Sorry, not what you asked.)

I often lay on the sofa knowing it's bedtime and lament not having a bungalow 😂

Trickedbyadoughnut · 26/07/2024 15:44

We used to live in a bungalow (in my mid-20s!) and it had a wraparound garden. I liked it but when it was hot I was always to nervous to have the windows open when I was in bed and we always had the blinds drawn to the bedroom so people couldn't see in. So I'd definitely look into some kind of security window things if we were to move into one again.

Good luck finding one - round here they all get bought up, knocked down, and big detached two-storey houses built on the plots.

I love my bungalow. Wrap around garden on all four sides, conservatory no wasted space, detached garage. It's lush. Grew in in bungalows too as dad was a builder and you got a better price for them.

Bungalows are awesome, 16 years in one and counting. Repurpose the rooms as you see fit, easy roof and guttering maintenance, an absolute delight!

I'm in a bungalow, though in a country where single storey houses are normal. I do not miss stairs. My robot vacuum can do the entire house.

It’s such a British thing to hate bungalows! Don’t have one now but I did and honestly they are great from a future proofing point of view and avoid all the stair issues. I would hate a three story and everyone on different floors but each to their own. Hilarious the idea that they keep you fit - just go for a walk, will be more pleasant!

I love, love, love a bungalow. Hate having to hoover stairs and go up and down whenever I need the loo. They tend to be expensive though, I guess because they tend to appeal to older people who have money from the sale of a bigger family house. I just wish there were more of them, the only ones I've seen round here were newbuilds and leasehold which I wouldn't touch with a bargepole.

I love mine 🥰 although I’m in Ireland where a lot of houses are bungalows…Especially rurally.

I've just bought a house and I'm not so quietly thinking it should have been a bungalow. Dh feels we are too young but really it's cos they are more expensive and snapped up so quickly.
Still would have loved it .
But right about stairs keeping you fit

Q124 · 26/07/2024 15:48

I'm in a 4 bed detached bungalow. I always think it's tricky when DS is trying to sleep and we're still up. I feel like we creep around whereas if it was a house, he'd be less likely to hear us

Coconutter24 · 26/07/2024 15:49

I moved 6 months ago into a bungalow and it’s amazing. No stairs to hoover, if I’m in the kitchen and forget something in the bedroom it’s just a short walk to go back. I love it more than I thought I would.

KatiesMumWoof · 26/07/2024 15:52

A few years ago I would have been reluctant to move into a bungalow (they're for old people) but now I'd kill for one!! However, around here they're VERY expensive, snapped up by builders to do up & sell on at £££££ more OR knocked down and big house built.

if you can afford one, I (now) wouldn't hesitate, especially if you'd have the money to modernise it.

WhyCantPeopleBeNice · 26/07/2024 15:58

We're on our second bungalow and I love it
We've got an odd layout as there's 3 bedrooms one side, living space then another 2 bedrooms on the far side.
It's been a godsend with teenagers as a) didn't hear them sneaking out windows when teens and b) now as young adults they can be up all hours, in and out and we don't hear anything!!

Plot size means a much bigger garden
Maintenance is easier
Could clean the windows (if I actually wanted to!)

My only dislike is one bedroom faces the driveway and is quite exposed to anyone walking passed

Redglitter · 26/07/2024 15:58

Our family home is a bungalow so we grew up in one. The garden is a lot bigger than the neighbours. There honestly weren't any downsides. It was/is a lovely family home.

One definite advantage is now my Mum is older she doesn't need to worry about stairs or move somewhere without any

Portakalkedi · 26/07/2024 16:02

Love it especially as I'm now disabled and was dreading going up and down the stairs in our old house and got to the stage where I would just come down in the morning then up again at night, and if I'd forgotten anything then had to ask DH. I always hated the waste of space and heating, extra cleaning that is stairs, landings etc, and it seems that one-story living seems more logical. It's a pity that more aren't being built, but of course profits are higher on a house.
