Is coaching the new mlm?

So many of my friends have started doing coaching, and I've just come across this. It's a franchise to become a coach.

£7k one off payment then £300 a month (from month 7) - a considerable outlay for what looks to be some online resources and a training course.

Something about it as an industry feels unsustainable to me, where will all the clients be for these franchisees? Are there really loads of people wanting coaching?

Or is this a great way for people to get into coaching with support?

It just reminds me of all the hype around mlms and I can't see how everyone is going to make their money back, let alone actually make a living.

Yeah if I were in the market for some coaching I'd want coaching from someone with a proven track record of success, not someone who has leapt on the nearest scamtastic bandwagon.

I find coaching ridiculous and potential for exploitation of vulnerable people is huge.

LightDrizzle · 26/07/2024 12:38

You are 100% correct.

I used to be a dating coach. Lots of American women paid for it. It was financially worthwhile but I had to do a lot of work at night because of the time difference. I had to stop when I had dd2

100% yes. It is all such a load of insufferable bollocks. I have a friend/acquaintance who I haven't seen in a while, great girl, good at what she did, and generally someone with great energy. However... now just banging on about vibrations, intentions, energy all over my instagram and to her few hundred followers. I feel sorry for her. I don't think she can see that she has been had.

I feel very similar tbh. I think the main issue is that coaching is not regulated. It seems anyone can coach!

I work in a HCPC regulated profession and do use coaching techniques as part of my role. I looked into training to become a coach (accredited) but felt there were too many online courses/people who are “coaches”. Ultimately I do not want to promote myself as a coach alongside other coaches who may have just carried out an online course for £100.
There are accredited routes but it just didn’t sit right.
I really believe coaching can be valuable - business coaching, sports, health and wellbeing etc.

I am also very aware that many vulnerable people are open to exploitation.

I have a friend who sees a “coach” as does her other friend and the coach discusses what the each of the friends have talked about in their sessions!
I did point out that at the very least all information shared in sessions should be kept confidential and I feel the coach is totally exploiting the situation and getting paid a lot for it!

What did this involve?

Temporaryanonymity · 26/07/2024 23:38

It’s basically the same but for middle class educated women.

I just worry that people who need an actual therapist might turn to a lifestyle coach who may not have enough self awareness to know that they are not equipped to deal with what the person needs. Given how tricky it can be to access therapy it must be a risk that it could harm more than help.

What did this involve?

Helping them design their dating profile and select photos, choose men to date, pick out clothes, manage text messaging and talk them through the dates themselves. Further on managing exclusivity conversations, meeting wider family and proposals. I enjoyed it and most of my ladies got married which was what they wanted.

DelilahBucket · 27/07/2024 07:46

Yes and it's absolutely rife on Instagram and Threads with people complaining they're not getting sales and what are they doing wrong 🙄

DanceTheDevilBackIntoHisHole · 27/07/2024 08:33

Good grief. Coaching cancelled be amazing but usually only if it's targeted and the person know what they're doing. I'm working with an amazing career coach right now but she came highly recommended by friends/colleagues and has spent years building a business. This sounds awful.

Dohen · 27/07/2024 09:16

This is for business coaches, so people to coach others about running their business. But it's being targeted at ordinary women, not business owners with experience.
