Would you take a new job for an extra £200 a month?

Basically applied for a job
I've been offered it
It's longer travelling time
8am start so I would be leaving home at 6.20 to catch public transport etc
I finish at 4 -would be home for 5.30
Great transport links
So if I miss a train there's another in 15 mins
Plus my partner drives so some days will drop me off at work.
But I hate my job now
And I mean hate it
It's also £200 a month more
I know it's not loads but to me it's a nice amount

At the minute I have around £400 a month spare for me after bills /food etc
So would give me £600 (that's taking into account train fares too )

Would you take new job ?
It's a permanent contract also

Yes. I would take it. Especially as you hate your current job.

WinkyTinky · 26/07/2024 11:46

Crikey, yes! Take it! Sounds like loads more to me.

Tarkan · 26/07/2024 11:46

I would do it even if there wasn't extra money if I was in a job I hated.

Even with the longer transport time it sounds like you've got a whole mix of great options there for it.

eryuod · 26/07/2024 11:48

I'm on a high income and I'd still class £200 a good jump (assuming that is net and after factoring in commuting costs etc). Especially if you don't enjoy your job, no brainer.

Pomegranatemum · 26/07/2024 11:50

Congratulations on the job offer.
If you really hate your current job then that’s a good reason to take the new one.
But if you hadn’t said that I would have been asking if the travel time/leaving at 6.20 might wear you down (depends what you’re used to), and whether you’ve double checked it will definitely be an extra £200/month after tax, national insurance, etc.

kellyloy44 · 26/07/2024 11:51

Yeah that's after transport costs and etc
I honestly hate my current job
It's a call centre and it's making me feel sick on a daily basis

The job is nothing fancy just a receptionist at a hotel
But it's a well known hotel and it's quite fancy with a nice discount for rooms (so I thought that would come in handy )
It's just the fear of meeting new people and hoping they like me

If you hate your current job it is definitely worth accepting the new one!

Witchbitch20 · 26/07/2024 11:56

Do it!

ExhaustedCoffeedrinker · 26/07/2024 12:01

As a previous call centre worker - DO IT.
Even if the new job isn't a forever position DO IT just to get out of that toxic environment (assuming it's like mine was) honestly the best thing that happened to me getting out of that environment.

Margo2023 · 26/07/2024 12:04

Definitely! Remember too that if you go for any future jobs it's a better starting point to be on your higher salary for future increases

WGACA · 26/07/2024 12:06

In your shoes in a heartbeat! The chances are you’ll be equally unhappy if you hate your current job or hopefully much happier. If you are friendly, helpful, hardworking, supportive and eager to learn they’ll love you! Go for it and don’t look back.

Sherrystrull · 26/07/2024 12:07

Absolutely! I do an aspect of my job for £200 and it's really worth it.

kellyloy44 · 26/07/2024 12:20

@ExhaustedCoffeedrinker that's exactly how mine is too
So much backstabbing /talking behind backs
We are questioned on how long we are in the toilet ,can't have a drink it our desk
Constantly pulled up on not "selling " enough
It's like mental torture
Not to mention the whole "team building " exercises we do.

Take it!

It makes so much sense. This is a case of "feel the fear and do it anyway" and "oh my darling, what if you fly?".

These two pieces of advice may now have been reduced to social media memes, but they were drummed into me by my mother in my teens and twenties. It took me til my 40s to really embrace them. It's really powerful you do "do it anyway",

PregnantWithHorrors · 26/07/2024 13:22

If your current job is that bad then yes.

unsync · 26/07/2024 14:24

You spend too much of your life at work to stay in a job that you hate. If you have the opportunity for change, you should most definitely take it.

wutheringkites · 26/07/2024 14:26

Hating your current job is the most important factor here, but yes, increasing your disposable income by 50% would be significant to everyone.

SingingSands · 26/07/2024 14:42

Jesus I remember working in a call centre after uni and it wasn't even sales related - awful places. TAKE THE NEW JOB!

Don't worry about meeting new people, it's normal to be nervous!

My friend started working on reception, then moved to the events team and is now the head of meetings and events at a huge hotel.

Hotels are great - so many different opportunities arise.

ExhaustedCoffeedrinker · 26/07/2024 16:25

@kellyloy44
We used to get ten minutes 'personal' break.
We had a script so strict that for example "how can I help" and "how may I help" the wrong one would loose some bonus. They would do anything to make us loose bonus.

WeeOrcadian · 26/07/2024 17:06

Call centres are the seventh circle of hell

Take it, grab it with both hands!

I don't miss the 'why have you taken 6 mins personal time today?' and 'no, you can't claim back the 8 mins you worked over the end of your shift, but NO, you can't start 8 mins late tomorrow' shite

I'd shit in my hands and clap before I went back to call centre work

Meadowwild · 26/07/2024 17:38

Yes, do it. I would way rather work hotel reception than call centre. And once you have experience you may be able to find similar work nearer to home.

ExhaustedCoffeedrinker · 26/07/2024 17:51

@WeeOrcadian woe betide you be 10 seconds late logging on.
I remember once I had an email from a 'team leader' asking when I was going to make the minute I owed up.
