Have you ever had to wear a bridesmaids dress you hated?

If so did you feel like crap all day or did you not give a shit after a while?

It's a big puffy sleeved high neck number and is so not me.

Yes! A puce blancmange, with a ringletted updo. As a gothy teen, I was convinced it was my SiL's way of making fun of me. Also a course of coerced sunbedding, which I'm still pissed off about.

Yes, early 90's I was at peak goth. Black hair, black make-up. Sister in law got married. Lilac dress, puffy sleeves and skirt, white stiletto shoes.
FIL tutted at me for drinking out of a pint glass. Although it was a pint of wine.

I am not having bridesmaids. I have many girlfriends so I don’t know who to choose without leaving someone out and I think lots of bridesmaids is tacky. Likewise, I don’t want to force someone to wear something that I choose and not what they feel good in. All my friends are more than happy to just be very honoured guests. Wedding is going to be very simple anyway.

I was a bridesmaid at my much older cousin's wedding when I was 13. The dress was horrible, yellow with a high neck and flouncy, trimmed with daisies and a yellow straw type sun hat with daisies and yellow ribbons on it.
The posy was yellow flowers and ribbons.
I looked like I was jaundiced in the photos.
Being a bridesmaid at 13 was awkward enough without looking like part of the Simpsons cast.

Yes I looked like a quality street wrapper 🙄 I sucked it up, smiled all day and just did all my
bridesmaidly duties. They were then a nightmare about dresses at my wedding!!!

Emmz1510 · 31/07/2024 16:17

Not exactly, but I was supposed to be a bridesmaid for an old friend who seemed to be trying to find me the dress that would least suit me, colour or shape/design. The colour was pale gold which does not suit my dark hair and everything I tried on which I felt looked quite good on me she would instantly dismiss. We never did settle on a dress but the wedding ended up not happening (they split up) and our friendship eventually petered out. Hard to explain but she had form for making me feel insecure about my weight/looks and she’s a narcissist.

I didn’t hate it - it was just uncomfortable and not my style. It was strapless and kept falling down. I paid £40 to have it taken in, but they didn’t do a great job & it was still an awkward wear. I wore it with a smile though!

I've done two which in the grand scheme of things weren't horrific, just not something you'd choose for yourself.
I sent my sisters off with a budget and to choose something they both liked provided it wasn't stripper like [not their style anyway]. That seemed to stress them out more than if I'd just chosen something and told them they were stuck with it so you can't win.
I'd hate the heavy make up though - if you are not used to it it feels really cakey especially if its hot and you won't be practiced at not smearing it on other people, onto your hands, etc

Willyoushutthefrontdoor · 31/07/2024 16:24

Yes. But I was 8. The 2 older bridesmaids were in turquoise...it was 1980! And they didn't have that colour for me so they stuck me In an angelic flowery pink number with what I can only describe as a swimming cap with flowers stuck all over it on my head. In protest, I put the 'throw out the car' money down my socks and jingled all the way down the aisle. We still talk about it now 43 years later 🤣🤣

OkapiSandwichAndARoastEgg · 31/07/2024 16:33

Yes, baby pink some sort of man made fibre and it was two sizes too big. Zero breathability on a hot day and I felt like a boil in the bag shrimp.

I wish I had backed out at the sight of that horror. It probably has a half life of 60 million years in the environment while the marriage lasted two years to the day by some miracle. Just want to forget the whole thing.

I had 2 styles of dresses in the colour of my choice for my bridesmaids. They picked them though as they were the ones who would be wearing them all day and I wanted them to look and feel good too.
