When will we see some blue skies rather than relentless grey?

To kick this thread off I am not wanting heat in particular, in fact I don’t mind if it is relatively cool for this time of year perfectly happy with 19 or 20 degrees (though 21-22 is my absolute ideal, a nice pleasant warm) what I am struggling with is not having blue skies, it feels like I am living in a relentlessly grey world, every day opening the curtains it’s just flat and grey and it feels like it’s never ending where I live. I am a fairly upbeat type of person and I love all our seasons, autumn being my favourite but this summer I have found the greyness getting me down. Officially we have had less bright skies this year (not that we need telling) the next set of figures will be released end of July, somehow I think they will make as dismal reading as the skies I’m looking at right now! Any hope of August being brighter pretty please?

From the government website:

In the latest monthMay 2024
There was an average of 5.6 sun hours per day, 1.6 sun hours per day less than in the same month in 2023 and 0.9 sun hours per day less than the 20-year average.
In the latest 3 monthly periodsMarch 2024 to May 2024
The average daily hours of sun was 4.3, 0.8 sun hours per day less than the same period a year earlier. The 3 months March to May 2024 were the dullest for that period recorded in the series commencing from 2001.
February 2024 to April 2024
The average daily hours of sun was 3.1, 0.7 sun hours per day less than the same period a year earlier. The 3 months February to April 2024 were the dullest for that period recorded in the series commencing from 2001.
January 2024 to March 2024The average daily hours of sun was 2.4, 0.2 sun hours per day less than the same period a year earlier. In the latest year2023On average there were 4.3 sun hours per day, 0.6 sun hours per day less than 2022 and 0.1 sun hours per day less than the 20-year average.

You will see blue sky within a few days of the schools returning in September. I think two years ago on the first day of the term.

I'd like some dryness.
I feel like I'm just pouring out sweat in the moist air under the rainy grey sky.

Though it may just be me being old and unfit. 🤪

Either way a bit of sun to dry my gussets would be welcome.

Ime August is typically warm, muggy and overcast. The sun appears again in September, which is often a beautiful month. Just a shame the kids have gone back to school.

It’s fairly blue skies in Manchester. I’d just like less rain but no warmer as our dog hates anything above 20

Everyone saying when the kids go back to school but even in previous years when the school holidays have been a bit shit, there has been nice weather in June and July (last June was pretty nice) before the kids in England break up

This year the sunny days have been few and far between. The Saturday of the late May bank holiday was nice (Sunday and Monday were mixed - with rain) 22nd June was nice - we went to a BBQ and following week and weekend were lovely. Last Thursday and Friday were warm and sunny. But we've had lots of awful weather - a few weeks ago it was 10° and pelting down. However anyone tries to frame it I'm not convinced that is in any way usual for early July! Even exam period wasnt hot this year!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 25/07/2024 18:12

Honestly I'm just grateful it isn't raining, I will accept the gloomy skies as long as it stays dry.

It’s a sorry state of affairs this year, being grateful for the grey! In all seriousness it must be dreadful for people who suffer with SAD, not much let up for them in 2024 so far.

Deepest darkest North Devon! we get less sun than South Devon anyway but it’s been particularly bad recently, doesn’t help I am inland either, it’s always a bit brighter towards the coast.

I live in West Sussex, supposedly the sunniest county. We’re also supposedly in a micro climate, with more sun hours than anywhere else and protected by the South Downs. It’s rained relentlessly all day.
