When did your toddler move into a single bed?

I'm currently redecorating and moving my toddler (2.5) into a bigger room which he will share with his baby brother (currently pregnant) - they unfortunately need to share as I need an office for work.

Currently toddler is in a toddler bed, but that will be used for babies cot when they're 6 months in their own room.

Trying to decide whether to get another toddler bed, or a single bed for toddler. Ideally I'd get a single, so I don't have to buy twice, however a toddler bed would fit so much better in the room (the room is big, but has a chimney stack in there which makes spacing weird).

My toddler is tall (97cm at 2.5) so concerned if I buy a toddler bed I'll need to buy a single bed next year anyway.

When did your larger centile kids move into a single bed?

My DD2 was v small but at 11 months, she piled up all the stuff in her cot, including shifting mattress, so that she could stand on it and climb out. So that made the decision really. She went to a single bed and was fine.

My 22mo has been in a single bed since 10mo. He's got a floor bed with an extra high guard so he can't climb out, well not yet anyway 😅

Toddler beds are usually 140 cm long, so even if he's very tall, you should get a good couple of years out of it. If it fits better in the space, I'd try to pick up another toddler bed off marketplace or similar – we got a nice one for free, although we did buy a new mattress for it.

Depending on the space, another option is a 'shorty' single bed, so 175 cm mattress. We've just gone to shorty bunk beds for our similarly awkward room.

I'd go for a second hand toddler bed. He should still have plenty of space in it and then DC2 can use it in a few years time if you wanted to upgrade to a single.

It also depends on how he sleeps. If he's anything like mine who seems to sleep curled up in the smallest ball imaginable like a door mouse he will probably still fit in the toddler bed when he's a teen. 😅

DS was in a single from 18 months. Older sister got a double bed so there was her old single going spare that we didn’t have room to store so it made sense to get rid of the cot, which already had the bars off and was being used as a toddler bed thanks to some early climbing skills, rather than the bed we knew we’d need long term anyway. I don’t think it makes much sense to buy another toddler bed that won’t go the distance but I get that the room is small so if I were you I’d look at the extendable beds from IKEA e.g. the Minnen as it can be a toddler bed now to maximise floor space and a single later on. It’s one mattress that goes with it too so you don’t have to replace that either when you come to extend the bed.

21mo. Didn’t have a toddler bed or guard rails. FWIW my 13mo still sleeps in a travel cot in DH study because they wake each other up. 23 month age gap. We keep trying every now and then but generally the cot is used for storage. 🤦‍♀️

Mine is moving from a mini cot to a normal single bed this week and she is very tall and 26m. Don't really see the point of toddler beds tbh! Our cot converts to one but we never got around to taking the side off, just going straight to a big bed as we have a spare one and want the space back.

JumpstartMondays · 27/07/2024 22:05

We didn't bother doing any of the toddler bed shenanigans, didn't see the point. Straight from standard cot to single bed with bed guard at 2y3m. Needed the cot for baby sibling.

Baby sibling will be going straight into single bed around a similar age unless they learn to climb out the cot, then they will go straight into single bed then.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 27/07/2024 22:07

Mine went straight from co-sleeping in my bed to a single bed with bed guard. Similar age

LegoHouse274 · 27/07/2024 22:10

When she was coming up to 5 years old! Toddler beds are plenty big enough until 6ish tbh unless your child is very tall. She is 6 now and still sleeps on her old toddler bed mattress in our room when we have family friends staying in her bedroom, and she still fits on it absolutely fine. She's around 50th centile for height, so very average.

Youngest is nearing 3 and still comfortably in cot bed with the sides up. Didn't take the sides down for DC1 til they were about 3.5.

FallingIsLearning · 27/07/2024 22:13

My smallish child went from her cot bed to a single bed at 8 years old!

This was partly because it was more obvious how it would fit in her room, but partly also because she didn’t need a bigger bed. (In fact, even at 5ft 2, I could sleep comfortably curled up in the little bed with her when needed.)

The tipping point to change was just because she wanted to change the decor in her room.

MyLovelyLily · 27/07/2024 22:48

I bought my 1.5 year old a single bed, slightly lower to the ground than normal and with guard rails. She absolutely loves the space to roll around in her sleep. She will be 2 next month and it's been a great success so far. She hasn't fallen out, she's learnt how to get in and out of the bed and there's space for me to snuggle in with her if she's ever poorly.

sunsetsandboardwalks · 27/07/2024 22:51

I don't really know any children who sleep in toddler beds - they all have singles with guard rails up.

Hellodarknessmyfriend · 27/07/2024 22:51

4 and still in with us (bedsharers) 😀

AllThePotatoesAreSinging · 27/07/2024 22:51

20 months for ds. Dd is just 1 but I think it will be around the same. Really hard to get in a cot with a poorly child so for convenience, plus both of them can climb even in a sleep sack.

Tiredsendcoffee · 27/07/2024 22:55

Mine moved into one around 2.5 when he started escaping the cot! We went for a King Single so it should last him for a good 10 years. It's also good on the odd nights as we can fit in the bed with him if needed.
