The last school standing?

A lighthearted thread, as I know there are lots of other schools still open. However, it feels like this term is never going to end. We don't break up until Friday, and the staff and children are on their knees with exhaustion. 😴

Is there anyone else out there who hasn't finished for the summer yet?

@SurreyMumOfOne it's usually a lot cheaper to go away the second week of May half term, and a much more bearable temperature in much of the Med than end of July/Aug!

DD doesn’t break up till next Tuesday. I really feel for the staff as a former teacher, they look shattered!

Oh good grief! Poor pupils and staff!!!!

I hope they don't go back until November!

How does a two week half term in May work for the exam year groups sitting national exams? I thought it was the one holiday in England that was standardised for this very reason?

GonnaeNoDaeThatJustGonnaeNo · 25/07/2024 19:19

We are half way through.

3.5 weeks holiday done.

3.5 weeks till they go back to school.

It's only the primary schools so doesn't affect GCSEs and Alevels.

I can’t believe some schools are still going, we finished on the 9th and are now home from our 2 week holiday abroad!

ZenNudist · 26/07/2024 08:13

Longer in October is better. You can have a proper holiday then. It's a shame to be in when everyone else is off now but you will be laughing in October.

littleducks · 26/07/2024 08:14

I didn't realise any schools were still going. Most around here broke up last Friday and a couple in borough over went to Tue/Wed this week.

We also have the two week over half term but running midweek to midweek this year. So I can't understand how the holiday is so short.

Lots of schools now have the two weeks at October so unfortunately it's no longer a novelty, plus the holiday companies have realised so it doesn't even get you a cheaper break any more.

Good luck to all those crawling to the end of today and for those still in next week I hope all your kids don't turn up so you can instead do new year prep and drink coffee. 😂

Is it because some schools have added an extra week holiday in October half term or longer for Christmas?

Schools must open 40 weeks of the year of which 5 of those days are inset.

The state schools near us have done this. Everyone is looking exhausted.

SurreyMumOfOne · 25/07/2024 14:09

I would LOVE a two week May half term would probably take a late finish now if that was the trade off. It's such a great time to do things in the UK and Europe and might even be a bit cheaper in the second week if the majority aren't off then.

To be fair, I do prefer it this way round. This year we went down to Dorset in the second week of the May holidays and it was a total bargain, plus really lucky with the weather.

When I was teaching, there was one year where they trialled a one week Whit holiday and a longer summer, it didn’t stick.

If DD’s school were breaking up today that would feel about right, it’s the extra 2 days next week I can’t get my head round!

Notellinganyone · 26/07/2024 08:57

I finished on the 4th July!

That makes more sense but then must be a real mismatch for families with children in both stages or teachers with children in the opposite stage.

MiddleAgedDread · 26/07/2024 09:33

@DanglingMod aye it’s great when everyone is in primary but not so good for secondary school teaching parents with primary aged kids or families with kids split across schools. My primary teaching friend loves it though now that her kids are secondary age and she gets a week off to herself!

No all the schools around here have the two weeks at October and similar amount of time for Christmas. I know logically we all work the same amount of days but we were trying to make it work in the staff room yesterday and just couldn't see how it did... Although that might just be because we're all completely done and even reception level maths is beyond us at this stage...

Well that must have a part to play as none of the schools in my area have 2 weeks in October. Private schools excluded. And we only finished Tuesday this week.

Temporaryanonymity · 26/07/2024 09:39

We finished on the 19th but there was very little going on in school.
