Food prep- Just interested in your points of view- is there a 'correct' order to make all of this in? (Lighthearted)!

(Only put lighthearted as I'm not stressed about it or such, I just have suspected ADHD and often get things completely the wrong way around and stress myself out)!

My parents throw a large 'naice' BBQ every year, invite all distant family, friends and neighbours.

Mine and DPs contribution is DP gets behind the BBQ most of the day so my parents can talk to people (DP prefers it that way anyway, likes having something to do, and gets free beer in return!) And I make some side dishes to relieve a bit of stress for parents.

I've been tasked with one dessert (I have a cake I frozen last week that may be designated for this! Or I might make russian slice with that and another cake).

Dips-guacamole, hummus, salsa
Potato Wedges.

Popcorn (!) But I had a surplus last year, took some and everyone loved it so popcorn it is(toffee flavour).

Friday evening me and DP are going to work at getting it all done. BBQ on sat.

I am getting in a slight tizz about it in terms of 'hmm can't make guacamole, it'll go brown, make that last-make all the dips at once first. Put spuds in first, I can then cook and make into Wedges but then the oven'll be on and will we be too warm in the kitchen all night. I live in a small house in a village and my kitchen is the size of a postage stamp.

Is there a 'right' way? Would you make one dish together then the next or designate one to each of us (I think wine might have to be involved here) 🤣 me and DP can also squabble in the kitchen. I'm very much 'bit of this bit of that'- DP is 'No! It says 20 grams you can't put 21 in!' And 'that's ten minutes out of date, BIN!' For context.

Guacamole has to be made on the day. You can make the other dips in advance.

Wedges you can cut and season in advance, put them in the oven on the day.

Cake and popcorn can be done in advance.

Yeah, as above. Don’t stress. I’d pick just one of you to do it if your kitchen is small, you don’t want to get in each other’s way especially if you have different approaches. Maybe one goes shopping for it, the other cooks it.

Thank you both. Okay guacamole can be done on Saturday then. DP won't let things be made any day in advance either (it'll 'go off') so it will have to be Friday eve (should have mentioned that, sorry)!

I’d do this:

You: make dessert (alone in kitchen) before Friday night.

Together on Friday nights:
Prep potatoes for wedges. Chop, season/spice etc. Set aside (cook on Sat at parents house in their oven.) I’d do this as it’s a ‘by eye’ spicing job.

Chop salsa ingredients (sounds like a partner job?)

Make hummus (also partner?)

Make popcorn (you).

Sat morning: guacamole

That sounds like a good plan @NoSquirrels !

I cook the potatoes twice. I make baked potatoes then 'wedge' them and then season and cook again until crispy and fluffy. My mum can make them but everyone prefers mine hence my being tasked with it (I should have used 'weaponised incompetence' and not been tasked with those too ) 🤔,no I'm quite flattered really. I'm just going to have to make sure me and DP don't harm one another in the process. 😂

Tell me more about russian slice! Best cake ever. mmmmmmm.

TheBestCrisp · 26/07/2024 16:16

I probably don't make it right! If I have leftover cake, I freeze it, when next leftover cake comes along, same-once I have three or more, I defrost, break up, mix together in a large bowl then cram onto a deep baking tin, pour rum or brandy over and bake until a good texture.

ALWAYS goes down a storm! (Apart from with me, I don't actually like cake of any description!
