Dogs in beautician’s

I regularly get nails and other treatments in a local salon, been going for years. The 2 ladies who own it often have their dogs there. They’re a cockatoo and JRT, both well behaved, usually in their baskets, I have no issue with them.

popped in today in passing to book an appt and a massive dog which looked like an XL Bully greeted me at the door. I KNOW IT WASNT AN ACTUAL XLB but it was that sort of size, very similar looking.

i stopped in the doorway and another lady who rents a chair there called it behind the counter.

did my booking, then it was wondering around again. Owner said, oh he’s fine, he’s really soft.

im afraid I spoke my thoughts which was to say, yes, that’s what they all say before a dog like that eats your granny in a sort of half joking way.

I don’t know whether I should ask that it’s tied up next time I go in, I’ve been bitten twice by big dogs and am q nervous

I agree with you, I hate it when people let their dogs loose and they run up to me or start licking my daughter and when we pull away, we are always told “don’t worry he won’t hurt you” and I don’t know how they can even say that, there’s no guarantee they won’t suddenly flip and attack.

The dog needs to be tied up, I would definitely ask next time you go there as you cannot relax otherwise

@Mumblechum0 vote with your feet find somewhere you are happy with ( I say this as a dog owner) cancel your appointment , explain why you are not happy if asked ,find somewhere else .

That's a very odd thing for them to do - plenty of people would be a bit nervous of an unknown large dog. And I assume they'd want to create an atmosphere of relaxation and pampering which doesn't really go with nerves.

I'd just go somewhere else as I'd find it a bit annoying and there are plenty of other places that offer the same thing without a dog.

Of course, some people will choose to go there because of the dogs, which is fine and their choice.

I wouldn't like this
I have a friend who has two bison frice, one of them is quite yippy and can snap. She put her right up to my youngests face when she was only around 9 months old, I obviously grabbed my daughter immediately to get her away as the dog was baring teeth. Friend replied oh "dog" is so gentle she loves children. I just don't get it, in any context.

Wahine24 · 24/07/2024 12:52

Some people think their "fur babies" are just great and feel everyone should feel the same, they can't see that others don't feel the same . There is a hairdresser near me who has her dogs in, they stink you can smell them over everything else in her salon it's rank. I can't imagine it does the dogs that much good with all the the chemicals.
As I said before I have dogs (who are bathed regularly) Im a qualified beautician though no longer do it, I would never take my dogs into work with me ( smaller breeds not toy dogs) it's just weird , like when people take their dogs to restaurants and try to demand a seat for them ( actually anywhere they feel their dog had more rights than a paying customer , trains, shops etc)

I'm a dog owner & I love huge dogs.

It wouldn't bother me to an extent (I'd actually love playing with it!) but I don't think it's particularly sensible - what if the dog needed the toilet while they were mid treatment? I'd be a bit 🙄🙄. Plus, it's not fair on the dogs and it's not somewhere where a dog hater would expect dogs at all.

Thanks all. I’m going to keep my appt as I’ve been going there for years but if that massive dog is there when I go I’m definitely going to tell them (not ask) to tie it up or put it in the back room.

Shouldnt be allowed in an environment like that.

DeliciousApples · 24/07/2024 18:15

Maybe see if that woman and dog are only there part time so you can go on the days they aren't renting a chair?

I'd be the same. I love animals but on my terms and being charged at or jumped on are not good doggy manners.

OonaStubbs · 24/07/2024 18:21

Dogs should not be allowed in work spaces, especially large "Devil Dogs".

startstopengine · 24/07/2024 18:26

I have 4 massive fluffy dogs and I'm bloody sick to death of going in shops, restaurants and everywhere and tripping over dogs of any shape and size.

I wouldn't appreciate having a massive dog greet me at a beauty place, it's for relaxing. Also what about anyone with allergies?

I have fluffy dogs and sometime short haired ones can make me have a reaction.

I'm with you 100% OP I wouldn't be impressed. TBH even the nicer small dogs in their baskets would put me off using the place.

I like my dog free space, it's to me like having children I live my own but other people can be irritating.

Anewuser · 24/07/2024 18:30

I have a beautiful lab but I assume everyone is afraid of dogs so never let him go up to other people uninvited.

Large devil dogs? But the small yappy nibbly dogs get to stay?

OonaStubbs · 24/07/2024 21:53

I would prefer it if all dogs were removed from places where people work. But large Devil Dogs are a danger, small yappy dogs are an annoyance.

thingsineverthoughtidsay · 24/07/2024 21:57

I stopped using my local salon for this reason. The place stank of dog food, and the dog ran up to greet everyone who walked in, including jumping up on my baby’s pram. It’s really not an appropriate place for dogs, and I imagine these places do lose customers because of it.

Sisterdeloris · 24/07/2024 22:15

I'm surprised its allowed for environmental health reasons but it seems its perfectly normal in beauticians/salons. Vote with your feet is the only way.
