Terrified for the dentist at 2,should I cancel?

I went to the dentist a month ago for a check up after not being for years.
They found I need 2 fillings
1 small and 1 medium
I get no pain from them at all
I have cancelled my apt twice now because I'm so scared.

I'm meant to be there at 2
I don't know if I can do it
I'm not scared of the needles or even the drill
I don't like the feeling of not being able to swallow and when they put the rubber dam or cotton wool on
I honestly can't stand it
I'm nearly in tears thinking about it

I don't know what to do

OP I am you, I absolutely hate the dentist, but you do need to go. I completely and utterly understand the fear, but it’ll only get worse if you don’t go, and then you’ll be stuck with horrible pain and it’ll be really difficult to get another appointment.

Please go, explain that you’re nervous, ask them to take breaks if needed.

Can you take some headphones and listen to music? I sometimes think the noises are as bad as the actual treatment.

However, if you do cancel, there’s a good chance you could end up with the teeth in worse condition, and with you being in more pain.

Maybe ask them if they do offer any sort of sedation that could help you relax?

How are you going to have the fillings done longer term if you don't at least go and discuss this with your dentist this afternoon?

I'm on my way now
I've got a hour to kill but I'm going to look in the shops
Feel sick as a dog at the minute but in 2 hours time it will be over

Tell them what you're scared of and they will try and help

Focus on that - it'll all be over in 2 hours

You have my absolute sympathy. I went to what I thought was a check up last month, hadn't been for years so had been on a waiting list. They announced I needed 2 fillings, what did I want to do? I said I'd do them there and then as I knew I wouldn't go back Blush
Cried like a baby for the whole time. Like you, it's the swallowing/cotton wool thing. I have a terrible gag reflex which is Just embarrassing! They were so lovely to me though ( and I did have a laugh with the receptionist about the noise.... BlushGrin)

Good luck! Do explain to them how you feel, they should be used to people who are frightened, as it’s not unusual.

SharpWriter · 24/07/2024 13:11

It will be fine OP. Please post back and let us know how you got on x

I did it -they did a clean too whilst I was there
Is it normal for bite to feel a bit strange ?
Dentist filled it down and said it looks fine
Is it just me getting used to this new feeling ?

Well done 👏. Yes they can feel a bit strange at first. I've had quite a few. 😫 Give it a few days and if still not right go back to the dentist.

AuntieMarys · 24/07/2024 15:19

Well done...I wish your appointment had been at 2.30 🤣

Onlywayisupmaybe · 24/07/2024 15:25

Well done OP, you should be really proud of yourself for overcoming the fear. I’ve got my appointment for a filling next week after putting it off for a year. Hope I can be as brave as you and go through with it this time.

That's great you've done it. Not unusual at all to feel like that after, give it a couple of days you'll get used to it.

Well done!
