How old do you think the child who wrote this is?

My 10yo is very similar to this. Hand writing possibly a bit neater. He is dyslexic

Chickenuggetsticks · 23/07/2024 17:56

Looks like maybe 5 to 6 if copied.

Growlybear83 · 23/07/2024 17:57

Five, possibly six.

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 23/07/2024 17:57

Copied I'll change my answer right down and go for 5

mynameiscalypso · 23/07/2024 17:58

I'd assumed it was copied/dictation in my answer so I still think 6/7.

AppleKatie · 23/07/2024 18:03

I’m not surprised it’s copied. Still 6.

what’s the answer?

Wonkyspecs · 23/07/2024 18:05

Could belong to my nephew who is 17 and only recently been diagnosed with Dysgraphia

Beth216 · 23/07/2024 18:06

5-6 I'd say as they normally learn to join up pretty young and this isn't.

reelcat · 23/07/2024 18:06

4

Tomatojuiceandvodka · 23/07/2024 18:08

As a teacher I recognise the story. It’s based on a short animated film called Alma. It’s kind of spooky so I’d be surprised if it was done below year five and everyone I know who uses it is year six. That said, the handwriting is poor compared to what a y6 should be able to do according to the teacher assessment framework- they must be able to write cursive to get expected standard.

Can’t comment on the composition if it is copied.

Apolloneuro · 23/07/2024 18:11

I’d say about 7, but they haven’t been taught or grasped letter formation, correctly.

Shitmum2024 · 23/07/2024 18:17

He is 9 just leaving year 4. He has autism and learning difficulties.

Year 3/4

His writing is neater than my 8 year old (also autistic). My son couldn’t spell that well either but you did say it was copied

typicaltuesdaynight · 23/07/2024 19:14

My ds writing was like that at 5-6 so I'd say 6?

Op! I do not approve of your username at all!! I would be lucky if I could even get my son to sit and copy something, you can see he has tried hard. It's really not easy for kids with additional needs.

Orangevlue · 23/07/2024 21:33

Lots of people are saying 6, but this is miles better than my 6 year olds writing!! Every child develops differently, my ds hates writing so I’m just proud when he manages to write anything, even if I can’t read it! I think this looks very neat so well done to your ds. Just focus on what is ‘good’ work for him OP.

I’d say he is doing grand OP

GanderingGoose · 23/07/2024 21:43

I know OP said that this was copied but as long as they could edit their work to correct the grammar errors this would be assessed as expected standard for year 3 (so 7-8). I'm a primary teacher and would be looking to place the child on extra handwriting interventions and reinforce use of capital letters, full stops etc. Apart from that, this meets a lot of the year 3 letting outcomes.

Why ask if he has special needs! It's hardly going to be perfect handwriting. It depends on his level of understanding, not his age.

Bourneyesterday · 23/07/2024 21:55

I don't know why people were saying 6 when we didn't know it was copied. Perhaps some 6 year olds are writing about getting a tingle to create the mood but it would hardly be the norm.

I think it is good for a 9 year old OP.

I just wanted to ask .

Laughing at someone suggesting 4.

The handwriting is 5. The content is more like 7.

Apolloneuro · 23/07/2024 22:01

This is an example of expected handwriting at the end of Year 6 (from gov.uk)

There’s plenty of time for your son to improve, OP.

Giannetta · 23/07/2024 22:12

It's looking good OP.

I have made exactly the same mistake myself with the copying. It's really hard to tell sometimes.
