Holiday toiletries

Thinking of travelling as a family with just cabin baggage. Never done it before. I know I'll have to take all my toiletries in 100ml bottles in a plastic bag to show at security. I appreciate some people just buy them out there but I'm quite fussy about my skin care and DD has sensitive skin so we would want to take our own, my 10 bottles would be shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, moisturiser, hair product, deodorant, perfume, sun cream x 2 and after sun. This wouldn't allow any allowance for any makeup! How do people do it? I'm also thinking I won't can pack tweezers or razors etc.
any tips appreciated please.

Normally if people travel cabin baggage only they travel light and often buy toiletries once at the destination.

If you want to take a full make up kit plus all your own specific toiletries then it doesn't sound like you are in a position to pack light.

dementedpixie · 23/07/2024 15:38

You are allowed 1 clear bag each max size 20x20cm. It's not 10 items but however many you can fit in the bag and it be able to be sealed shut.

Could you check in 1 case with all the toiletries you need?

needhelpwiththisplease · 23/07/2024 15:46

Check which airport you are flying from to see if they are still restricting liquids.
Not all are anymore

An alternative is to do a click and collect order to Boots airside.

You can take more liquids if bought airside and not through security. Click and collect will mean your order is ready and waiting for you - just check how far in advance need to order as I believe it's more than 'regular' stores

FoodieToo · 23/07/2024 15:54

For the first time ever I ordered a Click and Collect with Boots in Gatwick two weeks ago and it was just fantastic !
Just choose the branch AFTER security in your airport .
Suncream, conditioner, medication , toothpaste etc for 7 people at online prices !!!
Can’t believe I didn’t know about it till now .

Hibernatalie · 23/07/2024 15:56

I would do a click and collect from Boots and pick it up the other side of security

amoleamouseandacat · 23/07/2024 16:00

There are a few options

  1. You can have 1 liquids bag with up to x10 100ml bottles, each. The bag must shut. You can take tweezers and disposable razors in cabin bags. You could fill bags for others members of the family. I'm sure any DC are not going to have toiletries ?
  1. Order on line from boots to pick up airline at the airport. This way, you get the full range of products at Boots online and not just what they have in the shop at the airport.
  1. Buy at your destination. Could be cheaper but could be more. Not guaranteed to get your usual products
thursdaymurderclub · 23/07/2024 16:01

i do my toiletries shop by click and collect from boots... pick it up at the airport and its not counted as luggage at all.

We’ve just flown out of Birmingham with the new scanners. You could take as many bottles/gels/pastes under 100ml as you liked in hand luggage, no need to remove them from your bag (a nearly empty 200ml bottle will be noticed and have to be extracted and binned…ask DD why we know this!)
But, on way home you still needed clear plastic bag and the 10 X 100ml applied.

Bjorkdidit · 23/07/2024 16:08

Click and collect/buy at the destination but don't forget that you can't bring anything back with you so don't go overboard buying things you won't use up.

If you're going to the Med, you'll need to get your sun cream in Boots at the airport, from a proper supermarket at your destination or pay eye watering amounts for crap brands at convenience stores or beach front tat shops so be prepared.

Share things like shower gel and toothpaste. Use tiny pots for things like moisturiser.

As a last resort, if you can't find testers or small sprays, do without things like perfume, or take smaller bottles. You won't need 100 ml of perfume in a week, likewise lipsticks etc are much smaller than 100 ml, so as long as the bag seals, you're not limited to 10 items.

tortiecat · 23/07/2024 16:10

Consider solid toiletries? You get some really good solid shampoos and body bars, even for sensitive skin. Pare down your makeup to the essentials. Do a click&collect for Boots airside and collect your suncream and aftersun there.

tortiecat · 23/07/2024 16:11

Until we had DC we only travelled with hand luggage - never had a problem taking through a basic disposable razor and tweezers btw.

Don't rely on getting through the new scanners.

We were sent through the old ones at Leeds a few months ago because the new ones were constantly breaking or demanding rescans and the queues were massive.

This was after we'd been told at check in that the scanners were working. We didn't have excess liquids, so not affected but others did and were going insane because they were being made to throw away huge bottles of expensive perfumes etc.

Maddy70 · 23/07/2024 16:12

I only ever travel with cabin luggage. I buy travel size of my skin care. Most counters will give you them if you ask for samples?
Pack dresses (roll them) flip flops in case nice comfy sandles to travel and wear at night
2 shoets and t shirts 2 bikinis.
I always bring unworn clothes back even with that

Maddy70 · 23/07/2024 16:14

Purchase larger deodorant shampoo from boots once through security

FoodieToo · 23/07/2024 16:23

Also , we are a family of 7 and travelled for 9 days with just the under seat bag both with RyanAir to and from Dublin and EasyJet from London to Turkey .
We didn’t even pay for canon bags .

LegoLady95 · 23/07/2024 16:24

I have flown twice this year and it is only a max of 10 products if they are 100ml each. I took around 15 products as some were tiny, lip gloss, mascara etc. They just have to fit in the correct sized clear bag.
If you are travelling as a family you can pool your liquids and share out.
New scanners mean rules are beginning to relax, but not everywhere yet, and check your home trip rules.

LegoLady95 · 23/07/2024 16:26

Should add, it is a max of 1 litre total, in containers no bigger than 100ml, that fit in the correct size bag (and bag can close).

Furball · 23/07/2024 16:26

Faith in Nature do skin kind - Bars of Soap, Shampoos and Conditioners which would free up your allowances

Pollydollydoodle · 23/07/2024 16:28

Thank you all. Boots click and collect never even crossed my mind! Think that's the way to go!

I usually travel with just cabin baggage. I have a collection of small containers from hotels over the years, many are only about 20-30ml as you don't really need 100ml worth of most items. I squeeze out X days worth depending on how long the trip is, so I have the exact amount I need for the trip. Small jars are often better to be able to use up all the contents.
Depends how long we're travelling for, I tend to bring small shampoo/shower gel for 1 week or less, for longer than a week I buy family shower gel and shampoo.

For make up I switch to mineral foundation so the only liquids are mascara and lipstick/balm. DH sometimes carries some of my toiletries as I have more.

DownThePubWithStevieNicks · 23/07/2024 16:33

For make up, try to get as much as possible in solid form. Stick foundation (Charlotte Tilbury and Bobbi Brown do good ones), eyeshadow crayon or palette, solid/ packed cream blush, brow pencil etc. Pretty much only a tube of mascara needs to be in with liquids, and even then you’d probably get away with it.

As others have said, shampoo bars are great for travel. Clinique do really good facial soap bars that you can use all over (though an expensive way to wash everyone’s bodies!)

Feelingstrange2 · 23/07/2024 16:38

Make sure you know the size cabin baggage allowed.

We wnet last year and the allowed size is much smaller than it used to be. We were allowed a rucksack size for free. Our old carry on cabin bags were now over the free size limit and, although we could take them on the plane if we booked them in, they had become chargeable.

We ended up buying one hold bag return which the whole family put their stuff (and toiletries) in.

I don't blame you trying but make sure you know the size bag you can have for free.

narniabusiness · 23/07/2024 16:41

i always take checked in luggage. I don’t understand the advantage of trying to squeeze everything you need into a cabin bag. Every flight I’ve been on is packed and some bags get put in the hold anyway. The rest of the passengers look totally harassed trying to find an overhead locker that still has space. Given that you have to queue to get through security on the way out I can see that the only time saving is the 10 mins waiting for your luggage on arrival.
someone enlighten me.
