The BBC

The BBC is always going on about budgets and needing more money.

They could make a bit if they allowed people who are not in the UK and don't have access to it, to subscribe to the BBC iplayer for a monthly fee.

What a fantastic resource the BBC iplayer is.

I'd be surprised if they hadn't considered that and factored in the revenue from programmes they sell or license or show via BBC World.

Bluevelvetsofa · 23/07/2024 16:02

They’d have far more if they didn’t pay some of their presenters ridiculous salaries.

Needmorelego · 23/07/2024 16:07

The BBC sell the rights to many many of their programmes to be shown in other countries.
Many of their dramas are shown on PBS in USA for example.
They will make a lot of money that way.

deeahgwitch · 24/07/2024 10:43

They may sell rights to other countries for certain programmes but the BBC Iplayer has access to so many more.

They make more money buy selling the programmes individually to other broadcasters and streamers than they ever could by trying to persuade people to take out another subscription on top of Netflix, Amazon and quite likely Disney etc.

I'd just be happier about the BBC if they realised everything has a lifespan and did not continue things well beyond their sell by date. Think how many years Last of the Summer Wine continued after Bill Owen was not in it, how long Top Gear continued, and most of all, that there was ever more than one episode of the worst show at least of this century, Mrs Browns Boys.

Nesbi · 24/07/2024 11:00

Everyone professes to hate Mrs Brown’s Boys, and yet it gets high viewing figures, so you can’t really say that the BBC is not serving a section of its audience. People like different things I guess!

Bluevelvetsofa · 24/07/2024 11:17

Weird, because I don’t know a single person who has anything but utter contempt for the dross that is Mrs Brown’s Boys.

KeirStarmerIsAMensch · 24/07/2024 11:22

I really value a lot of bbc radio content but have never figured out how to stream it overseas. Would happily pay extra for it.

AzureAnt · 24/07/2024 11:27

Scrap the TV licence and go subscription only then the rest of us won't be forced to pay to not watch their biased reporting and smug presenters being paid millions to spout their shrieking leftie opinions

KeirStarmerIsAMensch · 24/07/2024 11:31

Glad I’m not the only one who finds bbc coverage too left leaning. Yet there are people who insist it’s very right wing so maybe it’s somewhat central overall?

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 24/07/2024 11:41

They talked about this on The Rest is Entertainment podcast - it's not something that they'd just haven't thought of, but they make more money by selling programmes individually to different countries, than by a subscription access to the whole of iPlayer.
You'd presumably have to remove iPlayer access to different shows in different countries depending on whether they'd already been sold to other broadcasters, I don't know.

It was a few months ago I think, but you could probably dig out the podcast as they did talk about it in more detail. I think it was a question edition, and this question came in from a listener.

Yep. Left-leaning people accuse them of being Tory puppets who give fascists like Farage a platform. Right-wing people say they're pansy liberals pushing the woke agenda. So they're probably getting it about right, imo.
