School uniform without teflon etc.

I was wondering if those who have looked into this and found any good brands (or a particular range of a high-Street brand) of school uniform without the coatings could share them here.

I'd like to buy school shirts and skirts that are not 'stain resistant' or 'easy iron'.

It would be great to stick to recommendations and not have the thread descend into a debate about whether I should be bothered about it.

I find all the TM phrased on M&S really annoying, I want to know what chemicals are added to make them stain resistant, odour resistant, heat technology, antibacterial ...

In fact, I want to be able to see what the materials are .. not that they are 'cotton rich'.. but what else is in them.... I might choose elastane, polyester, nylon etc... but I would like to make an informed choice.

Also look at this website: https://www.pfasfree.org.uk/school-uniforms which says that Sainsbury and John Lewis have some - and then the independent retailer information - but this is not very helpful and not entirely accurate - there are a couple of 'eco' brands that I also think use PFAS.. 'Stain resistant Teflon Eco finish'.. the eco part is that they use recycled polyester rather than virgin polyester.... but still add teflon..

I would be wary of any easy care, easy iron, stain resistant wording.

Fruit of the Loom might have some.. but I am not sure what their 'easy care' claims are - might just be the polyester / cotton combination.

These long sleeve school shirts are made from pure cotton and are part of our Skin Kindâ„¢ range, so expect flat seams, super soft fabric and printed care instructions that do away with bothersome labels. For the younger sizes (up to 8 years) they come w...

I buy uniform from eco outfitters for this reason.

Thanks for your replies.

What's the sizing like a eco outfitters? @autumn1638

My DD is average height for her a 7 yr old but is very skinny. Her current school skirt is age 5-6.

It's fairly generous I would say but if you look at the size guides it gives you the measurements. I measured my child and it was fine.

ToplessWordle · 23/07/2024 15:05

I use EcoOutfitters. However, I have found their skirts a bit difficult to size sometimes. A skirt that's knee length on my DD (admittedly slight build) was far too big around the waist (even using their adjustable waist bands). It was only one particular cut of skirt that had this problem, but I'd bought several and they were all the same.

Please write/email John Lewis/M&S with your concerns. The more of us do so, the more likely it is that they will introduce a range of uniform without the unwanted extras. Although that said, I'm still waiting for a reply or acknowledgement from JL to an email I sent nearly two weeks ago...

Ds has terrible eczema and we also use Eco Outfitters. Their range is a bit limited but good quality and lasting.
I do find things need more ironing than the usual easy care ranges.

SonicTheHodgeheg · 23/07/2024 15:17

I’ve not bought school uniform for a few years but back when ds was at school, his trousers were marketed as allergy friendly. (Teflon coated trousers exacerbated his eczema) Back then Tesco did 100% cotton trousers (but only before the new school year) and John Lewis

Ecooutfitters looks great!

Since posting this thread I've done some more research trying to find uniform that is in the sort of style my DD's friends wear (I'm not convinced she'd go for the Ecooutfitters pinafore) and that might be a little more budget friendly. I have found a few schoolwear bits that seem ok:

John Lewis GOTs cotton shirts
John Lewis Jersey pleated panel skirt
Winterbottoms pinafores (available from stockists rather than direct)

I've actually spoken to someone at Winterbottoms who has checked and confirmed that the fabric isn't Teflon/stain-resistant.
