We need a new car, i mean a new used car. We have 11k maximum budget. Id prefer petrol but dh likes the look of a hybrid. Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of hybrid?

Thank you

I like them. What sort of driving do you do and do you have a plug in point at home?

We've had hybrids for a while. Dh has a plug in that needs charging, big Mitsubishi outlander thing. Mine is an hyandai iconiq, self charging so no plug in.
We only commute a short time, drive to football matches, drive down to Dorset. Mile per gallon is thus superb. We only fill up once a month with fuel because using part hybrid a lot of the time. Sometimes my mpg drops but I can normally get 69, Dh can get 77 occasionally. Worst ever was 45.

We have a hybrid Kia (self charging, you don't plug it in), it is very fuel efficient and petrol seems to go a long way! It runs on the electric when you're going under about 15 miles an hour, so it suits urban driving well. We thought it would have a higher resale value in the future, if the government plans to phase out petrol only cars.

We have a self charging hybrid and it’s very economical on fuel. It uses electricity for quite a lot of the journeys we’ve done. It’s disconcerting until you get used to it, to hear nothing when you turn the engine on, but that’s all. Fuel consumption is around 70 mpg.

Fully electric cars don’t seem to have a good resale value and the infrastructure, though improving, is not as comprehensive as it should be.

I've got a self charging hybrid, its just like driving any automatic car as it switches between petrol and EV by itself as you drive. I only get 50-60mpg out of mine as I drive a lot of fast
cross country roads and have to fill up once a week but when I had the same car in the petrol version it was costing about a third more in fuel.

DappledThings · 23/07/2024 13:08

We had a self-charging hybrid. It was pretty good, DH got annoyingly competitive with me about who was getting the best mpg out if it.

We only had it a year or so because someone went into the back of us and it was written off. Replaced it with a standard petrol because I prefer a manual.

I had a self charging prius. I miss it! So much cheaper to run and I love how quickly responsive it is when driving in electric mode.

The only thing to be aware of is that it is silent in electric mode and pedestrians tend to walk out in front of you so you have to take extra care.

They are great for stop start town driving. Not quite so economical at motorway speeds but still better than petrol. I am hoping to return to hybrid when my lease ends on my petrol car.

Mine was on lease. If I was going ro buy one my only concern would be how much it may cost to repair anything to do with the battery. I would check this out. I think the battery design has improved and newer ones now last longer but worth checking this too.

We've got 2 Toyota Corolla touring sports at the moment - we liked the first one so much that when it was time to replace my car we couldn't find anything we liked better. Excellent fuel economy, easy to drive, good load capacity.

And they've got a 10 year warranty, I think 15 for the battery.

I think Toyota are the leaders in hybrid technology, they may not all be as good. (So-called 'mild hybrids' seem to be an unsatisfactory fudge)

I have pretty much the same question as the OP but this is what's making me hesitate,

Replaced it with a standard petrol because I prefer a manual.

I don't know whether this is a genuine concern though or I'm basing it on the automatics of the past. Are they much less responsive?

I was quite surprised that the used hybrids didn't actually seem more expensive than petrol cars.

SoupDragon · 23/07/2024 13:28

I have a self charging hybrid. With hindsight, a plug in hybrid would have suited my driving needs better as I do a lot of short journeys.

The only thing I don't like about it is the fact that it's automatic. I mean, it's OK but I'd prefer the driving experience of a manual.

I don't know whether this is a genuine concern though or I'm basing it on the automatics of the past. Are they much less responsive?

For me, it's just personal preference. To me, the car seems just as responsive as my old manual cars have.

It was definitely responsive. Accelerated far faster than anything else I've driven. I just overall find driving a automatic too boring.

Had to edit because I wrote manual when I meant automatic. D'oh.

You're probably basing it on the past. The Toyota automatic system is a completely different beast to the old ones.

I do still find them mildly disconcerting to drive because I sometimes feel like I must have forgotten to do something, they're so easy. Grin

Oblomov24 · 23/07/2024 14:03

I do love driving a manual, and miss it, but the automatics these days are so good, so easy.

EasterlyDirections · 23/07/2024 19:58

Mine's a Toyota too and it's a breeze to drive. I still drive DH's manual sometimes and can switch between them easily enough but I prefer the auto now.
