Help please! Birthday Party Fast Approaching - ideas desperately needed

Hi all

I'm posting here for traffic as other relevant subjects don't seem to get much of a response and I am in urgent need of some help as I just can't get it all done on my own.

A couple of months ago I thought it would be nice to have a party for my significant birthday which is happening next week. Unfortunately, having invited people a number of unexpected and stressful incidents have happened (seriously ill family etc) which have taken up all of the time that I had intended to spend organising my party and I now have a matter of days to get it all done.

Here's where you all come in. I would really welcome suggestions for the following please:

Easy party food - including for dairy/gluten free/vegetarian diets

Playlist - mainly 80's but also other good party tunes from the 70's, 90's, 00's too.

Partyware - I would like my party to have minimal environmental footprint but all the compostable partyware I can find is really boring. Does anyone know of any environmentally friendly plates or decorations that are in nicer colours or designs?

Finally, I wanted to make a photo board and thought I could take my old family snaps in to Snappy Snaps or similar and scan them/enhance them myself but it turns out this is something they do and is very expensive so I can't entertain that for the number of pictures I have. I have a scanner so can anyone recommend some free or inexpensive software where I can easily scan my pictures in and enhance them (they aren't really damaged, just faded).

I am running round like a loony for the next few days but will check back when I can and thanks sooooo much in advance for any ideas!

Food wise - what time of day is party? How many guests? Are you hosting at home or at a venue? Can you seat everyone or do you need fork/finger food? any budget restraints?

longdistanceclaraclara · 23/07/2024 14:55

What time of day? Are you going to prepping it all? How many people?

The crockery etc depends on what food you are serving.

The photos I wouldn't bother with digitising, it will take you forever and faded is part of the reality of old photos. That will give you time
To think about everything else.

Is it in your home?

AvocadoSurprise · 23/07/2024 15:30

Thanks for replying both.

It's in a hall, Saturday evening.

Approx 50 guests (could be more but some haven't RSVPd and I don't have time to chase).

Don't have a budget in mind and I was thinking finger food or maybe salads. There is a kitchen with an oven so I could heat some stuff up but wouldn't want to cook lots. Can do prep Saturday daytime.

For 50 I'd keep it simple a big cheese board, crackers, oatcakes, grapes, chutney, pickles, olives, charcuterie platter. Crisps, nuts.

Pick a few warm nibbles and do plenty of them, cocktail sausages in honey and mustard are always popular, maybe puff pastry squares with Brie and cranberry for the veggies and chunks of chicken breast marinated in tandoori paste mixed with yoghurt. Serve sausages and chicken on cocktail sticks.

I find in this situation, large quantities of fewer items is the way to go.

Illpickthatup · 23/07/2024 16:54

Most take aways shops do buffet platters. As does M&S if you want a more refined selection.

longdistanceclaraclara · 23/07/2024 18:39

Ok no to salads, difficult to eat unless chopped salad and you have searing for everyone at a table.

I would, if you have time to collect Saturday go to m and s and get ordering sandwiches / wraps. I think it might be 5 days though. Assemble a cheese board with all the nice things.

Do you have a Costco card or a friend with one?

Do you have an oven in the hall?

What are you doing about drinks?

I did the food one. Sorry it didn't copy and paste well.

Here are some easy party food ideas that cater to dairy-free, gluten-free, and vegetarian diets:

Dairy-FreeHummus and Veggie Platter: Serve a variety of hummus flavors with an assortment of sliced vegetables like carrots, celery, bell peppers, and cucumbers.Guacamole and Chips: Freshly made guacamole with tortilla chips.Stuffed Avocados: Avocados filled with a mixture of black beans, corn, tomatoes, and cilantro.

Gluten-FreeRice Paper Rolls: Fresh vegetables, herbs, and rice noodles wrapped in rice paper, served with a dipping sauce.Mini Frittatas: Baked in muffin tins with vegetables and herbs.Fruit Skewers: Assorted fresh fruits on skewers, optionally drizzled with a dairy-free chocolate sauce.VegetarianCaprese Skewers: Cherry tomatoes, basil, and dairy-free mozzarella on skewers, drizzled with balsamic glaze.Stuffed Mushrooms: Mushrooms filled with a mix of breadcrumbs, garlic, and herbs.Bruschetta: Toasted gluten-free bread topped with a mix of diced tomatoes, basil, garlic, and olive oil.Combining Diet NeedsFalafel Balls: Chickpea falafel balls, served with tahini sauce or dairy-free yogurt dip.Quinoa Salad: A fresh salad with quinoa, cucumber, tomatoes, red onion, and a lemon vinaigrette.Roasted Chickpeas: Spiced and roasted chickpeas for a crunchy, healthy snack. These options should provide a variety of flavors and satisfy guests with different dietary needs.

Thanks everyone!

Sorry, I don't know how to reply to specific people.

If I do cheese, how much would you allow per person? This is the sort of thing I am unsure about.

The nearest Costco is unfortunately over an hour away so not an option. We usually shop in Lidl but Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda, Morriston and Lidl are all local and Waitrose is about 15 minutes away.

I have asked people to bring their own drinks although I suppose I might need cups & ice.

I have never used Chat GPT. Is it an app? It has some good ideas. The Gosh ones they sell in Lidl are tasty & suitable for vegan, dairy & gluten free, I think.

And I will check out those plates, thanks!

You definitley need to provide cups / glassware / possibly soft drinks / option for tea / coffee.

What's at the venue?

Tbh you sound very under-prepared!

PartOfTheFurniture12 · 23/07/2024 20:28

Waitrose do sandwich and wrap platters as well as other finger foods, including vegetarian options. I'm considering them for an event myself. You'll need to give them a few days notice, though.

AvocadoSurprise · 23/07/2024 21:27

Well, yes, I agree I am completely under prepared which is why I am asking for help. Unfortunately unexpected and significant family illness with the caring responsibilities all falling on me has meant that the time I would have spent planning and preparing has been taken up with other essential things.

I am very grateful for all of the suggestions, there are some really good ones.

Music - this is what Spotify playlists are for!

NowItsMeMyselfAndI · 23/07/2024 21:41

I would change tack and get a team together to help! More fun to plan with other people, you shouldn’t be doing it all by yourself.

Do any of your friends/neighbours/family have older teens who would like to earn some money for helping out? They could help set up and be servers/ clear up at the end. The last thing you want to do to celebrate your birthday is to sweep a community hall after a boozy party!

I’d try to avoid cooking at the venue - you want to enjoy your party!

happy birthday btw

Fushia123 · 23/07/2024 22:35

We organised a party for our 25th wedding anniversary a few years ago. In the end we had to cancel as we both got covid!
To lessen work for me when planning things we asked a local deli to cater. Also found a local firm that supply plates, bowls, glasses, cutlery, tablecloths etc. They were going to bring everything the day before, and then pick everything up the day after the party to take away and wash!
Food and crockery was really reasonable and would have saved a lot of work if it had gone ahead. Might be worth considering for your do?

scrivette · 23/07/2024 23:20

You can do it - I did a party on my own for 45 people recently (children included) and got most of it from Lidl.

The cheese platter/biscuits/grapes is a very good idea. I had about 8 different cheeses and about 5 boxes of different types of biscuits.

I made half a loaf of cheese and tomato sandwiches and half of cheese and cucumber. Ham rolls and egg mayonnaise rolls, I am always surprised how popular the egg mayonnaise is.

I also had loads of cocktail sausages, sausage rolls and chicken dippers.

A vegetable platter with chopped up peppers/cucumbers/carrots with different hummus and dips and olives.

For puddings I made cakes and had bowls of strawberries and blueberries, but you could buy ready made cakes.

I also had an Indian platter with samosas/onion bhargis/Indian crisps and sweets. (This was from Iceland and a specialised store).

I have found that the easiest way of presenting the food is on large trays (mine are from Ikea) with smaller bowls on them if required.

Best of luck!

AvocadoSurprise · 24/07/2024 15:45

Apologies for delayed response - have been running my relative round to appointments again this morning.

Such great ideas, thanks all. I now have a rough plan which I might tweak depending on what they have when I go shopping.

I have a couple of friends who have offered to do food preparation so they will be cooking veggie sausages rolls and chopping pepper/cucumbers to dip in houmous.

I have delegated music to my children and signed up to a free trial of Spotify so I will just keep my fingers crossed that I like what they come up with.

And I have no doubt that a good number of my friends will pitch in with the tidying afterwards so I'm not worried on that front.

I feel a lot more optimistic about it now. Just got overwhelmed by it on top of everything else! Thanks also for the kind birthday wishes. xx
