Help! Anyone else's house this messy after the weekend?

Does anyone else find that their house is a complete tip on a Monday morning after the weekend? I only have one child but he is age 4 and very full on, and despite my best efforts doesn't put things away. I obviously try and encourage him to tidy up and when that doesn't work tidy up after him but it's about striking a balance between spending time as a family and not spending the whole weekend cleaning and tidying. On a Monday morning there is stuff everywhere - and he's a big fan of playing with things that aren't, actually toys e.g. raiding the kitchen drawers to play restaurants or bringing down books from the shelf to play library.
I work from home but running my own business and I find that I spent all of Monday morning and sometimes majority of Monday just resetting the house. We do spend a lot of time out of the house at the weekend, but we always come home a couple of hours before bath time to let him play at home, and he also starts playing from the moment he wakes up whilst me and husband are showering. What am I doing wrong? What can I do differently? I know I need to get my son to be more tidy, but it's a working progress.

I involved my children in tidying up, we did it together.

Every night before bath we'd have a clear up session

It’s a “ work in progress” - sorry OP.
Can you put child locks on the kitchen drawers? And maybe keep some books out, put some away, then swap them over every so often. Your DS sounds like he has a great imagination. I would do the same in his room & other main play areas like the lounge - store a certain number of toys away & rotate them. Do you have a spare room for his toys? Guessing maybe not if you WFH. If you have one big tidy up daily, don’t do it at bedtime & try to make it into a game (bet you can’t put these away as quick as Mummy & Daddy type of thing).

Oh yes, sorry that was a typo.

We don't have a spare room, and I have to work at the kitchen table so the mess is all around me. A big declutter is needed I think.
