In between London and Cornwall

Does anyone know of anywhere we can stop about half way between London and Cornwall? Somewhere we can spend a couple of hours. It will be pouring with rain.

Thanks for any ideas!

To add, we have NT and EH passes.

Bath? Lots to see there in the rain.

Hibernatalie · 22/07/2024 19:17

Bath is a good shout!

Where abouts in Cornwall? It's 1.5 hours from the Tamar to Land's End so your final destination affects the 1/2 way point quite a lot.

CrushingOnRubies · 22/07/2024 19:20

Tyntesfield is a National trust places with lots of grounds to run around in just south of Bristol on the M5.

Scampuss · 22/07/2024 19:29

Are you doing M4 or A303?

East Cornwall but it doesn't have to be exactly half way, I just mean between really.

I prefer A303 but flexible

There are a few NT places off the A303 as well like Lytes Carey Manor, Montecute and Barrington Court.

Wookey Hole might not be that far a detour either.

Scampuss · 22/07/2024 20:22

If you want something a bit different, Haynes Motor Museum and Fleet Air Arm Museum aren't far off the A303,

Hibernatalie · 22/07/2024 20:30

Tempted by Wookey Hole but it's quite expensive...

Agreed!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 22/07/2024 20:32

Stonehenge! There's a Harvester on the nerby Solstice Shopping park for a quick meal too.

CuriousGeorge80 · 22/07/2024 20:33

We stop at Darts Farm for food, small play area and a little petting zoo thing. It’s lovely but maybe a bit too far from London. Also depends on age of kids.

swansease · 22/07/2024 20:36

IKEA Bristol 😂

Chickoletta · 22/07/2024 20:36

Wookey Hole is really not worth the money. Tyntesfield or Montacute are both great if you like NT properties. Alternatively, shopping at Cribb’s Causeway (just outside Bristol)? There’s also a bowling alley, cinema, various restaurants etc there.
Exeter’s also nice for a mooch about.

LindorDoubleChoc · 22/07/2024 20:37

I'd plan for two stops on a journey that long.

LindorDoubleChoc · 22/07/2024 20:40

I'd also just stop for the loo, stretch of legs and food or drink. Not stop and spend hours at an attraction or wandering around a city as presumably you want to reach your destination in one day?

ilovemydogandmrobama2 · 22/07/2024 20:41

Dyrham Park? It' NT and off the M4 - it has a cafe at the bottom and a bus back if you can't face walking up!

ScarletWitchM · 22/07/2024 20:46

We’ve stopped at Stonehenge when going M4/M5 route but have also gone the south route and stopped at Salisbury once and Winchester another time. We were going to do either Wookey or Cheddar Gorge when we went this Easter but the weather was so bad we didn’t stop except for fuel and loo breaks!

crumblingschools · 22/07/2024 20:56

If the weather isn’t too bad the Hawk Conservancy

Panicmode1 · 22/07/2024 21:00

I was going to say Haynes Motor Museum or the Fleet Air Arm, especially if it's tipping it down. Stonehenge you can see from the road 😁

It's ok we go every year so very used to the journey, just looking to break it up with somewhere different this year.

I agree that Stonehenge is only worth a look from the road. The Fleet Air Arm Museum is brilliant, both boys enjoyed it so much when we visited.
