What to do after the school day?

DS starts school in September. He finishes at 14:45. What are some good things to do afterwards? He has ASC and is non verbal so I'd have to accompany him. There are no after school clubs at special school.

Park
Swimming
Library LEGO club
Playdate
Craft at home
Help you make a pudding as a treat - this been be very interactive and good for self esteem, following instructions etc
A ramble with a purpose - count the birds, find different shapes leaves, collect tiny things to freeze in ice cubes
Feed the ducks
Beach if you live near one
Somewhere with a river for paddling or a rope swing
Riding lesson
A special programme that you watch together. For us it was pet rescue
A special toy that you bring out once a fortnight or so.
Bike ride.
Go to pound land and choose one thing, then have a snack somewhere.
Cinema for a treat

That should have been therapeutic riding lesson - check RDA clubs near you.
Depending on his interests, going on a bus or train just for the fun of it.
Make a fort inside or den outside.
The library and sure start might tell you what else is happening locally.

Highly recommend extra trousers and tops so all of this isn't detailed by a refusal to get changed after school

Don't underestimate how exhausted he might be, or conversely like all of mine, how hyped up he might be. So I'd see how he copes and then do the stuff you used to do that he enjoys.

Some luke lots of activities, others just need to decompress and go home. Try different things and see what works for you. Xx

For the first term at least, falling asleep is the main after school activity, OP! A fairly filling snack so they don’t zonk out while hungry can be a good call.

Especially for the neurodiverse, as they can have sensory and ‘people’ overload and need to decompress, I found it best not to arrange things until we’d had time to see how they responded to the rhythms of a school week.

If there’s a children’s yoga it might be worth a go - my ASD and ADHD DC found that great for helping them regulate themselves after a busy day, and we kept up some of the exercises at home.

Thank you all! Some really lovely ideas and things I had not considered. Will he be tired if he is used to nursery?
