I went on holiday just after Labour won the GE. Can you fill me in?

Did the markets fall? Has the economy collapsed? Have women been erased? Have we been subject to invasion from hostile foreigners? What about foreign relations? How are we getting on with other countries?

What's been occurring while I was away on my holidays?🏴‍☠️🌴

I am barely able to answer. I am chained to the kitchen sink, my bank has gone bust and the power keeps cutting ou-

On the contrary, the world has been saved and is now all sunshine and rainbows. 🙄

seriously, anyone who believes the next decade of labour will significantly improve anything is just as stupid as those who thought the tories would. It’s all cyclical. In 2036 we will all be hating labour and wanting a conservative government. If china hasn’t taken over the world by then anyway.

Hi @TooBigForMyBoots
Welcome home.
Yes you'll be glad to hear we are now living in a socialist utopia.
Everyone previously underpaid is getting a massive pay rise shortly. Everyone previously overpaid is going to be taxed to oblivion. There aren't going to be any complex unexpected consequences of this. Health, schools and unemployment are all on the way to being sorted. It's all fine now. Have a cup of tea.

StormTreader · 22/07/2024 17:02

They've announced a few policies that are looking hopeful (windfarms, house building, nationalised rail) which is a nice change from the last lot who did furlough and then essentially clocked out. I don't know if these things will work out but by god its nice to feel that theres a plan for SOMETHING to change.

IClaudine · 22/07/2024 17:04

Oh. I thought this was a lighthearted thread?

Well, Labour has been in power less than three weeks, so a bit early to tell.

Starmer has made it clear that things will be tough and not all sunshine and rainbows.

The stupid populist Rwanda plan has been axed.

The government looks grown up, but the Tories still can't behave inside the House or outside of it.

Really @OpizpuHeuvHiyo? That's a relief. Almost as much of a relief as the many cups of tea I've had since getting home. UHT milk ruins tea and makes me sad.

I'm glad to be home to a proper cuppa and health, schools and unemployment... ...on the way to being sorted.BrewGrin

Axing the Rwanda plan is good. I can't believe the Tories spunked half a billion pounds on that shit when the country was broke! I've no idea what Sunak was thinking when he staked his reputation on it!Shock I have no doubt the future inquiry into it will reveal those who profited from the country's loss.Hmm

I saw in passing that Cleverley (sp) and someone called Kevin something are considering standing for leadership. Fun times ahead!

I can. It was purely to appease Reform voters, who went and voted Reform at the GE anyway.

Oh, and Labour have a plan for prison reform. Interestingly, the old prisons minister threw the Tories under a bus last week and said "it's a good plan, I wanted to do most of it myself because everyone could see the prison system was completely broken but was blocked by my party at the time as they didn't think voters would like it"

Well, by the third Sunday of Ordinary Time, following the Coming of the Saviour Kier, He and his Apostle St Rachel have spoken to the masses.

Verily they have said that peace will be made with the powers across the water about import duties and those sneaking in on small craft. The Good Lord Kier will make it happen even if the leaders over the water tell him to fuck off and laugh at his sidekick, St David.

Also, humble but stout homes by the million will be built in the desert. That will happen by the will of the Blessed Kier even if his backbenchers and Taylor Wimpey tell him to fuck off and laugh at another of his acolytes, St Angela.

Apart from that, the land is as it was when you were last to tread on it.

The good scribes, worshippers and sycophants of the Labour Party are in full throat glorifying every last thing about the Holy Party on Mumsnet, so that’s business as usual as well.

Welcome back.

Some weird, detached from reality posts on this thread.Confused

Before I went loads of mnetters were predicting doom on every level, but especially for women, if Labour won. It has now come to pass and as @FinalCeleryScheme says, that country is much like I left it. But without the Rwanda policy and the shambolic mess of a continuously(?) chaotic Tory party in government.

This all sounds suspiciously positive.Hmm Have Labour not wrecked anything since winning the election?

It's only been three weeks, give them a chance (to either be great, crap or somewhere in the middle). None of the predictions were going to happen immediately, if ever.

Yeah. Very positive. The country’s just as it was under the Tories.

No disasters. And nothing good either. Same as ever.

Serencwtch · 22/07/2024 19:27

They've not wrecked anything yet but only been in power 3 weeks so compared to Truss they are doing well.

The mood is positive & people are expecting change but there is a lot of pressure on them to un do some of the gender stuff which is worrying.

They've met with the junior doctors but have made it clear they cannot fund their demands so expect more problems with NHS strikes. Theres rumblings that public sector workers overall will see a pay rise.

Not heard much on the private school VAT plan. Seems to be being watered down with exemptions, loop holes etc so may turn out to be a flop with no positive impact on state schools.

I think most people like me feel like change is in the air & cautiously optimistic.

The US election & Trump/Biden actually seems to dominate the media.

If there have been no disasters in the time I've been away, the country is not just as it was under the Tories.Grin
