Is it OK for kids to "get their nails done"???

Teenage DD just called to ask if she could (she's out and asked me on the hop). I don't even know what it means tbh (I've never even painted mine!).
Help?!

How is it unhealthy for their hair? We still wash it and tie it up or wear turbans. And yes from infancy. I would have been well into my twenties before I first considered trimming my hair and even now I have never taken it to a hairdresser, I just trim it myself.

I was just pointing out the manicure thing is cultural. I found the idea of taking a child to the hairdresser odd but accept it is normal here. They are just.local choices. Not good or bad just whatever seems normal where people are.

There are good reasons to object to manicures for a 14 yr old like the cost and the fact the nails will break and she needs to check the salon is reputable and the workers aren't trafficked.

But saying haircuts are essential and manicures are not us wrong when a) for example I always cut my own kids hair and b) some of us survived to adulthood without having our haircut at all!

Haircuts and manicures are both just inessential treats for kids. But there's absolutely no reason not to give kids treats.

As someone that rarely goes to the hairdressers myself and I do cut my own hair, most people do get their hair cut. The ends split if it doesn’t get trimmed. I’m not talking about having it styled, just a simple trim. It’s more beneficial to have it trimmed than not to, there is no benefit to having coloured nail varnish on.

Honestly, you could say this about anything. Character clothes, cute hairstyles, a glittery backpack that they like...I assume you are not taking your kids to the hairdressers for a cut? Because that's not really necessary, is it? Scissors and a comb in the shower - job done.

It’s the going to the salon to get it done professionally though, as a pp pointed out, the chemicals exposure etc isn’t ideal either. Most people wouldn’t go to the salon to get a 4 years olds make up done, because it’s meant for adults not kids.

Kids grow up too fast these days. 8/9 year olds getting gel nails, it’s so damaging. It’s hard saying no when some kids have them done, so you may as well not encourage it whilst DD is only 4 because it won’t be long until she’s asking you herself ‘because everyone else has them’

DS has his hair cut at the hairdressers as I can’t do it properly - I used to be it looked a mess. DD gets it trimmed about twice a year but she’s mid teens so a lot older

As long as the salon is staffed by qualified techs and not trafficked then it's no different to other beauty treatments, not essential but nice to do. I have gel extensions (thinner than acrylics) and my nails are just fine underneath, i always rest in winter after Christmas but are in great condition straight off. If the staff don't speak English I would be wary about if they are legal. My local salon is Vietnamese run but staff are legal, with kids in school locally, they have copies of their visas in store to prove it because they are asked!

I'm pretty confident in my ability to say no to her if it's something I disagree with like makeup. Painting her toenails a pretty colour isn't a big deal to me.

Idk what salons other people are going to with gels, acrylics and chemicals - the one I use seems to do only regular polish. It's more pedicure/manicure like nail care rather than getting big nail designs done. Maybe my salon is the unusual one.

I, can't understand why any young dc would need, not that they need anything but need gels or acrylics.
Old fashioned polish is fine
