Use of laughing emoji for serious topics

I see on facebook that people use laughing emojis for topics or replies which are not at all humorous. It is clearly meant to ridicule the other poster and seems to be used instead of any reasoned argument.
A sad state of affairs when communication is reduced to this. It seems like pictorial bullying designed to shut people up.

It's Facebook. What do you expect?

loropianalover · 22/07/2024 12:58

Your expectations are too high for people in Facebook comments!

IncognitoUsername · 22/07/2024 14:25

Is this your first day on the internet?
Some people make themselves feel better but laughing at others. I don’t say it’s right, it’s just what happens. Oh and if you think FB is bad, stay well away from TikTok

Blackcats7 · 22/07/2024 14:53

No, it is not my first day on the internet. And there are perfectly intelligent people on fb but sadly there are also others who are rude and ignorant.
I don’t expect perfection but I think it is reasonable to comment on this particular behaviour.
Never looked at tic tok or instagram and no intention of trying either.
I suppose some people have always been thus but social media puts the issue on display.
It certainly is a double edged sword.

You are not seriously expecting reasoned argument on Facebook!

INeedNewShoes · 22/07/2024 15:12

I'm with you OP. It's really irritating. Pretty much every post anyone makes on Facebook seems to attract this response now.

its social media... its a world wide public platform where anyone and everyone has access too.

The crying/laughing face is the sure sign of an arsehole. Multiples of it are worse. Which gives you the ability to ignore and scroll past.

NoWayItWas · 22/07/2024 15:18

There are a lot of idiots spouting utter nonsense on Facebook, they deserve to be ridiculed.

It’s used a fair bit on here tbf

Gymnopedie · 05/06/2025 12:21

It's why MNHQ have removed the laughing emoji from the 'react' button on here. The same thing was happening.
