Why do you go the supermarket rather than have food delivered?

I took my 2 kids to a big Sainsbury's today whereas we normally have a weekly home delivery. It was awful with them messing about etc.

There were, however, lots of other families there.

Why do you choose to go to a physical supermarket rather than a weekly delivery? Is it:

  • you enjoy browsing (but with kids in tow - is this not really stressful??)
  • you don't spend the minimum spend (I think £50) to get delivery?
  • you want the yellow label items?
  • you see it as an outing out the house?

Each to their own but interested in other perspectives.

I do both!

Boring heavy cupboard stable stuff / cleaning products I get delivered.

Fresh meat and veg I like to be able to see and choose. I find I get better quality this way.

Kpo58 · 22/07/2024 11:39

Because I want the food today and not some point next week.

I want to choose the fruit and veg that I get instead of getting any old bruised item.

You can't get the yellow labeled discounted food by getting it delivered.

Because I'm bored with cooking and want inspiration.

Because I don't want random substitutions and then have to go to the shop anyway.

Because sometimes it's the only chance I have to get away from the kids.

GingerLiberalFeminist · 22/07/2024 11:39

Mainly to compare process, check discount etc which arent obvious online.
I have a toddler who loves being in the trolley looking at everything
Gets us out of the house!

ShutTheFuckUpCakes · 22/07/2024 11:40

Because I mainly go to lidl which doesn't deliver.

And because I want to pick out my own produce not get whatever slimy old lettuce or soggy tomato that the packers chuck in.

Seeline · 22/07/2024 11:40

Not being able to pick exactly what I want from meat and veg/fruit
ridiculous substitutes
Items just not being sent which means I haven't got anything for dinner etc - if my planned menu items aren't in the shop, I can pick something else.

My DCs are adults now, but they used to enjoy a supermarket trip when small. Could look for things on the shelves, or have their own list when a bit bigger.

itsnotabouthepasta · 22/07/2024 11:41

We've gone back to shopping in person because the quality of the fruit and veg has become much worse with deliveries - we get the crap stuff that's basically ready to be chucked out.

Also, with ASDA, we're regularly getting 15+ substitutions each delivery

Needmorelego · 22/07/2024 11:41

I do my main food shop as home delivery but regularly go to supermarkets for the non food products.
The easiest retailer to me for a decent selection of clothes, toys, books, magazines, stationary, household things etc is a giant Sainsbury's.
If I'm in there on a busy Saturday it's usually because I have gone clothes shopping!

BumpyaDaisyevna · 22/07/2024 11:41

Because I shop at two supermarkets that don't deliver - Aldi and Booths.

Oyuo · 22/07/2024 11:41

i tend to do click and collect from Tesco, the Tesco nearest to me is crap very limited selection and that’s the one that delivers to me, the further away one doesn’t deliver to my postcode so I shop in store or click and collect

RaraRachael · 22/07/2024 11:41

I don't have kids in tow but have never had a supermarket delivery. We have Tesco and Lidl in town so I do Lidl first then go to Tesco for the stuff I can't get at Lidl. I tend to go early in the morning when it's not busy and there's plenty to parking.
I like to choose my own stuff and can't be faffed spending time on my laptop ordering things. I've heard increasing numbers of people getting the wrong online orders or silly substitutes.

Mumoftwo1316 · 22/07/2024 11:41

It gets us out of the house, and also helps the kids learn about buying things and how much they cost etc. It has aircon and London is hotter than a volcano recently.

But my dd is very docile/obedient and my ds is still a baby. I wouldn't go if they messed around, I need an easy life.

FuzzyStripes · 22/07/2024 11:42

I sometime do it because I wasn’t organised enough to book a shop for the right time, the shop I order online had lots of substitutions or missing items and I wanted to get hold of the original items ordered, plans had changed so I needed more food and slots weren’t available in time, to select the meat/fruit/veg myself, I wanted something not sold by whoever is doing the online delivery…

MeMyselfandCake · 22/07/2024 11:42

I love doing my weekly shop, very sad I know. It's a nightmare if I have to take my kid so I usually do it when he's in school. But I love getting a bargain and picking the best dates.

TenderChicken · 22/07/2024 11:44

Because you meal plan but then the ingredients don't show up because they're out of stock or substituted, even though they're really basic items.

taxguru · 22/07/2024 11:49

I do both. I get the heavy stuff, household, frozen, tins and packets delivered.

I go in store for fruit & veg, meat, chilled, dairy, bread, etc.

I found I was having to go back with rotten/off food in the day or two after delivery, especially fruit & veg, and they usually pick/send stuff from the front of the shelves, so shorter dated, which I sometimes also had to take back afterwards, or send back with the driver if I noticed they were too short dated.

RaraRachael · 22/07/2024 11:51

I found I was having to go back with rotten/off food in the day or two after delivery, especially fruit & veg,

This is another reason I shop in person. My nearest delivery shop is over 20 miles away

caringcarer · 22/07/2024 11:52

Just to get out of the house sometimes if I've been in for a couple of days.

LindorDoubleChoc · 22/07/2024 11:53

I do a mixture. I tend to have these things delivered: food cupboard items (tins and dried goods like rice and pasta), biscuits, crackers, soft drinks, wine, cleaning products, loo roll, kitchen roll, basic toiletries, freezer basics like chips and peas. In other words all the boring and heavy stuff you just always buy on repeat.

Then we shop more or less daily for fresh food and things for specific recipes. On my shopping list today I have new potatoes, green beans, strawberries, marmite (run out and not getting a delivery soon enough!), milk, hummus, sun dried tomatoes, eggs.

I have the great luxury of not having to take children with me anywhere any more Grin.

andyourpointiswhat · 22/07/2024 11:57

The big supermarkets here in Aus are terrible for short shelf life produce. If you do your shopping online you are pretty much guaranteed all your meat and veg will need to be used within 2-3 days.

TBH I quite like supermarket shopping these days with adult DD who lives at home. She cooks for the family a few times a week and likes to food shop with me. Very different to the days of shopping with three kids!

BeaRF75 · 22/07/2024 11:57
  1. Because the supermarket is at the end of the street, so it seems a bit lazy to have it delivered!
  2. Because I want to choose my own stuff, especially re sell by dates.... I usually want as long a shelf life as possible.

Plus there are only 2 of us, so it's not onerous - I can whizz round in 15 minutes.

ApolloandDaphne · 22/07/2024 11:58

In basically just like to be in control of the food I buy. I like to choose my own fruit and veg, check dates and change my mind if I see something I fancy having that I hadn't thought of. My children are adults now but even when they were small I didn't mind taking them with me if I had to.

countrygirl99 · 22/07/2024 12:00

Got fed up of inappropriate substitutions, short dated products and bruised fruit.

RoachFish · 22/07/2024 12:01

I would take my kids to the shop because we didn't have home delivery back when they were young but they also never messed around in shops. There is some value in taking your kids to do every day things such as washing the car, food shopping, DIY shops etc. They shouldn't feel like they have to have fun all the time but learn what normal parts of life are and how to act in different situations.

Comedycook · 22/07/2024 12:02

I go to the supermarket rather than getting it delivered.

I'm a sahm so I have the time.

I like looking for the best produce and the things with the longest use by dates

I like just browsing as it gives me ideas

If I can't find what I need I prefer to get my own substitute rather than whatever the supermarket decides to give me

Comedycook · 22/07/2024 12:04

My dc are older now but when they were little they used to enjoy a trip to the supermarket. They'd sit in the trolley, help choose the food, sometimes I'd get them a magazine. We used to go to a supermarket with one of those kids rides outside that you pay a quid for...so they would go on that before or after.
