Emailing Spanish Hotel

I need to email the hotel we're going to be staying in. This is maybe a dumb question but is it rude to email them entirely in English?!

I don't speak Spanish but I could put in Google translate and put that in aswell?

I usually do both, just so I've made a bit of an effort. They will use English as a universal language for communicating with non spanish speakers from accross europe so you'll be fine.

I always email in English but try and add some Spanish such as starting the email: Hola, Buenos Dias and ending with Gracias. I don't know much Spanish but i try and get some phrases. I don't trust Google translate not to scramble what i write 😄

CordylineCapybara · 22/07/2024 11:42

@NeedthatFridayfeeling this might be the best option as I don't want Google translate to make things confusing!

Yes, stick it in Google translate

HappierTimesAhead · 22/07/2024 12:01

I would just email in English.
I used Google translate when emailing a random little French taxi company and they emailed back in perfect English 😂

I do the same as well 😎 Just reminded me I need to email our hotel for a request for our upcoming holiday!

Maybe they also used Google translate.

My bil is a maitre d, in France (he is French). He admits that he is much nicer to foreign tourists who try to speak French, rather than those who look at him dumbly and then speak English slowly at him.
His English is perfect btw.

Make the effort with the greetings @OP

Perhaps they did although not sure why they wouldn't just respond in French since I emailed them in French.

I live in a very touristy part of the UK (and have worked as a waitress serving some of those tourists) and it has never once bothered me that some tourists don't speak English and try to speak to me in their own language. I would genuinely never expect someone to learn English just because they have come on holiday here.

I agree that making an effort with the greetings is a nice gesture.

LlynTegid · 22/07/2024 14:51

I would do both a request in Spanish and then one in English.

As would I, depends on what area you are going to.

I live here and lots of places speak Castellano plus the local language. Not necessarily English (especially at the moment)

FictionalCharacter · 22/07/2024 15:00

Spanish hotels who have British guests will have staff who speak English. I usually start the email by apologising for writing in English instead of Spanish, and they write back in perfect English! I’d rather do that than risk sending them a hilariously wrong AI generated email. As long as it’s common hotel languages involving food and bathrooms etc they will understand you.

BlackStrayCat · 22/07/2024 15:07

... It does depend on area though. The popular places all have English speakers, but not if your are more off the beaten track.

Have a great time!
