First gluten-ing as coeliac - how rough will this get?

I was diagnosed two years ago at 36. Have been really careful but think I may have been accidentally glutened.

I'm in a tremendous amount of pain and am visit #5 to the toilet.

When will it pass?! Am currently lying on the bathroom floor. What should I expect over the next few days?

TIA

Unfortunately everyone reacts differently. I’ve friends with Coeliac who are silent coeliacs so happily consume gluten as they have no affects (and yes they know the long term risks). Whereas I’m coeliac and I will be in agony for at least 6 hours after eating a very small amount and usually react within the hour. I will feel off for several days after with bloating and brain fog as well.

With me the pain/ duration seem to be linked to how much I’ve ingested. Pre diagnosis I once ate pasta and garlic bread, the night before a flight. For 12 hours I couldn’t leave the bathroom and that was with taking Imodium (I know now not to take it if I’ve been glutened). That’s when I started to realise something wasn’t right!

I’ve not found anything that works for me when I’ve been glutened, other than letting it work its way out.

Fingers crossed you feel better soon.

It usually takes my friend 24 hours to get over the worst and then a few more days of feeling wiped out.

Thank you. I'm trying to just let nature run its course but it's almost like I've ran out but my body still wants to get rid (sorry, TMI 🤮).

This pain is dreadful. I'd say as bad as labour.

I don’t think people understand that the pain can be so intense from just eating a small amount of Gluten, I will be sitting on the loo crying, it almost feels like someone twisting/stabbing my insides. I know what you mean by feeling like it’s all out, then a fresh batch of pain starts with nothing emptying.

I’ve had noro virus and the pain of being glutened was worse than noro pains.

I hope it's not too bad for you OP, and it passes quickly.

I have to say that when I read the topic of your thread I thought for a minute that you were experimenting by taking gluten as a coeliac to see if you could desensitise yourself. Sorry for thinking that, but I did have a WTF moment there for sure!

Now I know what being "Glutened" actually means. Must be so awful.

Buscapan I think it's called- charcoal will help, peppermint tea too, paracetamol. Horrible horrible 😫. How you feel better soon.

CormorantStrikesBack · 21/07/2024 22:42

Lots of water and a hot water bottle. Hope the worst passes soon.

Me and both the kids tend to projectile vomit within a few hours. Once it's all up it's usually just the rest of the night with a sore tummy

WannabeGilmoreGirl · 22/07/2024 00:07

I get 24 hours of diarrhea and sickness followed by about 5 - 7 days of tiredness, joint aches and general feeling awful.

Hot water bottle, paracetamol, bus company, peppermint tea and try and sleep it off.

Worst pain I've ever felt.

Good luck.

My coeliac husband is the same, he vomits like it's an exorcism within about two hours, that goes on for several hours and then bad cramping and some gastro. Always wiped out the next day, will usually try to sleep it off.

YouBelongWithMe · 22/07/2024 02:14

Thanks all. The gastro symptoms have finally stopped, just feel wrung out. Will try sleep it off for as much of tomorrow (today!) as possible.

Sorry you've all experienced this too.
