Mouth ulcers and digestive issues

On and off since I was a teenager I’ve had a big problem with mouth ulcer flare ups. Usually 3 or 4 at once, on my bottom lip, very big and sore and lasts for a few weeks - one will go and another comes up. This usually happens a couple of times a year. I’ve also had what I thought was a ‘nervy tummy’ - cramps, diarrhoea, rumbling and trapped wind, and a very quick urge to go (usually in the morning and it fades off during the day).

It’s just occurred to me that these things usually happen together and Dr Google suggest mouth ulcers are linked to digestive issues.

I’ve been tested for celiac regularly as a type 1 diabetic so I’m fairly certain it isn’t that, but I was wondering if anyone has had symptoms like this and what it turned out to be?

It’s flared quite badly recently and I’ve also had thinning hair, peeling skin around my nails and what feels like palpitations. Obviously will make a GP appt but wondering what to ask after. I’m 32, female.

Thanks!

Dc main symptoms were mouth ulcers, digestive issues and fatigue. Was diagnosed with coeliac disease.

I had similar issues for years and first tried cutting out dairy, no change, then cut out gluten. All my problems stopped. I ate gluten free for several months before trying some again. Got a mouthful of ulcers and tummy troubles again.

I went to GP who agreed could be coeliacs and then had a miserable 6 weeks eating gluten until I could have the blood test. It came back negative but the doc said if cutting out gluten worked before I should see if it does again and then I’ll have my answer. Been fine for years being gluten free. I still don’t know if I have coeliac or something else (there’s growing reports of something called non-coeliac gluten sensitivity; basically react like coeliac but without getting a positive test). I’ve also read that the blood test doesn’t always pick it up. It has a high rate of false negatives and I believe they could refer for further tests without a positive on the blood test but they never did that for me.

Crohns? Thyroid?

B12 deficiency can cause hair thinning , weak nails, ulcers and digestive issues, particularly if it's caused by pernicious anaemia, fatigue is also very common and dry skin

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 21/07/2024 21:54

Oh I missed the palpitations that's a classic b12 deficiency symptom. (I was diagnosed this year)

It’s coeliac disease…the test is shite! Cut it all out (properly, no cheating) and you will see a difference…you don’t need a test…you need to see improvement in your health…

ZebraD · 21/07/2024 21:56

also…if you have coeliac disease and you are not cutting it out you will obviously have other issues as you will not be absorbing nutrients properly
