What are you all doing with the books and work coming home from school?

Ok it’s the end of term and the ritual end of academic year clear out.
I have 2 DCs yr5 and yr 2.
ny yr 2 bought home 2 carrier bags worth of books.
my yr 5 currently has 1 folder and book in the kitchen. And a
load in the boot of the car.
I feel so bad throwing it away but surely no
parents can keep all this?

Why not ask them what their favourite thing is each and keep that.

SleepingStandingUp · 20/07/2024 17:48

When I had one,I kept it all. Then the twins started school .... One book per subject per year is my current thing but that's still a LOT of books. So it'll probably wean down a bit more over the years to one per year or something. Additional homework, depends on how big and significant it is to them. I go through it now but will probably go through it again next Spring and prune it further

I keep everything but my dc are younger so we haven't had that many years of it yet! I put them into carboard boxes and keep them in the loft. I have started digitising some by scanning it but I have still kept the originals.

My exemplary practice was to chuck it all in a cupboard for like years. Then you open the cupboard, get crushed under a pile of books at some point when there's no kids around, put a single drawing or exercise book in a memory box for your kids to throw out after you die and take the rest to the tip.

OneOpenPlumOrca · 20/07/2024 17:53

I’ve kept it all in 4 big boxes in the loft.
DS is 18 and DD is 15 I’ve never thrown any of it.
When we cleared Nan and Grandad’s house they had all my mum and Aunt’s school books.
I assume mum still has mine.

I look through it with the kids and get them to choose any pieces they are particularly proud of. The rest gets recycled. No one needs to keep maths workbooks forever!
Disclaimer: I am not at all sentimental over anything.

WhoWereTheBratPack · 20/07/2024 18:03

I've kept a few from reception and the younger years, especially ones with pictures inside. DS also wanted to keep his art books (primary).

The rest to recycling. Otherwise it just becomes overwhelming. I think I have a couple of school books from my childhood and have never wished for more!

I've got all my reports and maybe looked at them a handful of times as a adult and I'm nearly 50!

Primary school - I have a quick look and make admiring noises, put it to one side then bin it.

Flaskfan · 20/07/2024 18:09

They used to get a week to look through them, then recycle.
My mum kept all kinds of stuff like that. We were not grateful when it came to clearing her house. Just more clutter.

Wumblewimble · 20/07/2024 18:13

I kept what is clearly their own work, mainly stories they wrote and their Monday morning' what I did at the weekend' books.
I'm particularly fond of the story of a wedding we attended which culminates in a drawing of DH vomiting by the side of a road. That's never going in the bin.

TheGriffle · 20/07/2024 18:13

DD’s pick out anything they want to keep (mainly art pictures) the rest goes in the fire pit to be burnt.

Theseers · 20/07/2024 18:21

It all goes in the bin !

Notaflippinclue · 21/07/2024 14:52

Wait till they get their own home and then hand it over for them to sort out - if you put it in your loft it will end up in a skip when you pop your clogs
