Important parking-related question.

Our driveway fits two cars on it, one after the other.

DS was being given a lift and asked which car he should get in. To make it easy logistically, I said 'whichever is at the back'. Meaning: whichever is closest to the road, the one that was driven in last.

DH said 'that doesn't make any sense, the one nearest the road is at the front'. It will be driven out first.

So I countered with 'I drove in behind you, I'm at the back'.

And he said 'If you'd reversed in, you'd be in front'.

How the hell am I supposed to tell DS which car to get in from its position?

The front one is the one that will be removed first.
The back one needs another car though move.

wandawaves · 20/07/2024 17:49

I think the one closest to the road is at the back, because if you guys are in the house, it's the car furthest away from you, hence "at the back".

Grazianoscubanheel · 20/07/2024 17:58

The front drives on first, the back drives on second. It's that simple.

Curlygirl06 · 20/07/2024 18:32

Hmm, to me it depends where you're standing at the time. If in the house, the one nearest the road would be the one at the back if you were looking out of the window (I know you weren't looking but you know what I mean)
If you were on the path or road outside looking in towards the cars and house, the one nearest the road would be at the front.
Does that help?

Disclaimer- I've got problems telling left from right and visualising anything so I might not be much of a help!

usersuserse · 20/07/2024 18:33

just say the one nearest the road.

From my point of view it would depend which way they were facing which isn't hugely logic referable to the front of the cars

so if both had the front facing towards the house, the one at the back would be the one near the road - being the 'back' of the cars.

if both were reversed in, the one at the back would be the one nearest the house - as the front would be the front of the cars.

if they were in different directions, I'd apply the same thinking but based on the direction of the car nearest the house!

Tell him to get the bus 🤷🏻‍♀️

Clearly a diagram is needed. This is the current car configuration.

I’m still going with one on the end but if I had to choose based on your diagram and only front or back then I would say car a is the front car.

But that might just be because we read left to right.

PuttingDownRoots · 20/07/2024 19:03

This is an interesting thread of perspective...
Some people prioritising what the cars have done (I.e what order they arrived)
Others what they want the cars to do (ime leave)
Others where they physically are
And some what direction the cars are facing.

So looks like no one is wrong!

I'd say car a is the front car, in the same way that id say the front door is on the front of the house near the cars and the back door isn't...

I'm trying to imagine your ds patiently sitting in the front car, unable to go anywhere because the back other car is bang in its way.
Is he still there?

Werweisswohin · 20/07/2024 21:05

Always reverse in (it's normally safer and easier to reverse in than out) and drive out.
Last reversed in is at the front and so first out.

DS is on my side! DD is, however, on DH's side. I brought it up at dinner and it got quite heated.

So how to describe the car may depend on which child is getting a lift and from whom.

We have the same sort of driveway.

The car at the back is the one nearest the house always.

DappledThings · 20/07/2024 22:58

The back is nearest the house. Reversing in is the "correct" way to get on to the drive to me. I never drive on forwards so if a car is facing toward the house having been driven on forwards its position is incorrect. Both cars should be reversed on so there is no argument that the one furthest from the road is the back one.

Looks like vote is against OP!

^
Because this was a scenario where I didn't care which specific car he got into, so long as it was the one nearest the road so I didn't need to move the other car to get out.^

There's your answer. Although I not that veneer you've said they are both near the road, but I can't work out how that works with a tandem driveway.
