Boomer parents

Anyone else got a boomer for a parent that a) has no idea how the world currently works and b) loves to put the boot in and c) is absolutely delusional about how much things cost.

me, I love to sniff out a bargain, crowning glory the summer hols I’ve booked for me, dh and dcs. 4 star+ AI, 2 adults 2 kids, package £2k and in summer holidays. Absolute belter. All to be met with a chorus of how expensive that is and how much we’re over paying and how they’d spend no more than £1k on holidays for us (in the mid early 00s). Plus, don’t want to go there, they hate brits, it’s too hot. (All places we went as kids btw)

it can’t be just me

Yeah but try being controlled by boomer parents all your childhood and adult life and being bullied at school because of them. My friends had much younger parents so they didn’t suffer the same as I did and they thought me/ my parents were just plain weird. It’s not so much that I want to slate them, just I feel that they have had so much control and influence over my life and I’ve made some pretty bad life choices due to them knit picking at everything I do with their old fashioned beliefs.

Oh cry me a river. My parents were 35 when they had me and pretty much the oldest parents considering they are SILENT gen. My siblings were 18, 15 and 8 years older than me. What a whiner you are. You know what, my sister was 34 and 36 when she had her youngest 2 and 49 when she died! They would love to have their "older" mother still around, instead of being teens when they lost her. You keep on whining though about nothing. Jesus fucking christ.

Phoebefail · 20/07/2024 09:17

Technically I am older than a classic Boomer, born during WW2. We are not all like this. I try not to be critical of others but it has been difficult for me because of the strict opinions of my parents and having a Grandparent (b.1880s) living with us.
Don't judge us, we are products of our upbringing as are you. Ours was an environment of rigid social attitudes and response to authority even as we were working class. Yours has been a much more liberal upbringing and freedom.

Dear god. Talk about blaming controlling, dysfunctional parents on a whole generation!🤦‍♀️

My parents are/were boomers but they're great.

Its down to personality. My DF wasn't like this and was delighted at what I could do and afford. I miss him every day.

My DM who never went anywhere or did anything or worked would still come out with remarks like leaving my DS with strangers so I could work and for me to just get a council flat (when I was pregnant and reeling because my ex wanted to leave) rather than stay with her. That I spent too much money (my own money) and my house was too small. Meanwhile she bought her groceries from Marks and Spencer. I went NC with her. I do not miss her now she's dead.

Medical advances are also really benefiting the Boomers.
Previously pneumonia was the old persons friend and if lung cancer didn't get you then heart failure or some other untreatable cancer would.
We now have my 87 year old fil after two heart operations, googling every advance under the sun , rattling with pills and thinking about going private for a knee operation.
This generation will not be denied their healthcare!

At 87 your fil isn't a boomer, he's part of the silent generation. And how sad you'd rather he died than was given medication to allow him to survive. He must be an awful person, for you to wish him 6ft under, so perhaps you and your husband should have gone no contact with him years ago, then you needn't know about his ailing body.

I think.boomers probably comment on the price of things because they are shocked at the amount of money the younger generations spend on unnecessary crap while simultaneously complaining they can't afford to buy a house

This is also ageist. You can’t complain about someone making general statements about one generation whilst simultaneously doing that about another.

Maybe instead of making sweeping statements, people need to just focus on individual situations, ie, OP talk about what frustrates you about your parents. Agree with someone else and try to limit what you tell them about finances if you know it’s going to cause a rift.

Dear god give us a break. And by that I don't mean boomers, I mean people with a brain.

Oh cry me a river! Maybe walk a day in my shoes, if you got time I can go through all the shit I went through! You have no idea about my life or how I was brought up so go away please 🙄

I was 33 when my youngest was born - so what? What you trying to pick at???

GoldfishSoup · 20/07/2024 09:24

brightyellowflower · 20/07/2024 08:52

How much?! No wonder they're all moaning they've got no money!!! Jesus. I would never in a million years waste £6k going abroad if that's the case. Not been abroad in 12 years. Had a perfectly amazing week in Wales for £800 this year :)

I’m a millennial and I think £800 for a week is mad! I am often very surprised by the price of things these days to be honest and that people are willing to pay them!

Lentilweaver · 20/07/2024 09:25

Imaging saying "Medical advances are really benefiting obese people/pregnant women/people with disabilities. They really will not be denied their healthcare" Why is it ok to say it about older people? My dad deserved every bit of his healthcare after 50 years of hard work as a doctor himself.

How can you be a boomer and have a 15yo ? Aren't boomers the baby boom following WW2 so retirement age now ?

I thought boomer was 1945-1960. So at least 64 ,now you had your son at 49 ?

@Neurodiversitydoctor @MyMotherWasANarcissist

No, Meadowfinch is definitely female. 😀

I was born 1963 making me the last year of the boomers. My ds was born 2008 making him 15 - 16 in two weeks time.

Some of us 'Boomers' have never come close to a gold plated pension. I work full time, pay a mortgage (because I didn't buy a house for £250), busy raising DS, running parkrun, going on our first holiday abroad since covid. Probably just like you guys.

All this 'boomers have it all' nonsense is so ignorant and tiresome.

Neurodiversitydoctor · 20/07/2024 09:26

ContentSolitude · 20/07/2024 09:16

I don't know any boomers who lived like that, and I didn't know wealthy boomers. Maybe the generation before that.

Are you saying you were born after 1946 and you did a family's washing like that as an adult ? In what year ?

Boomer born early 1950s here, and many people did indeed live exactly like that - in fact in the areas where I lived the majority of people lived like that (Glasgow and Liverpool).

Such an ignorant post in every way.

In what way @ohno2024 my Boomer parents, thanks to modern medicine have survived the diseases that killed their parents. Occupational health improved to the point that we can joke about being smoothened in health & safety gone mad.
My fil is researching knee operations when he is unlikely to ever walk more than 2000 steps in a day. I made no judgement call on that. He's determined to use his capital and demand his right to pay.

I think you misread my post. I was born in the 70s. Worst I remember is using a mangle after the washing machine. Then hanging on the line. I think the description given was more likely of the silent generation than boomers.

Because everyone benefits from medical advances.

I suppose you do see that represented in programs like Call the Midwife. My parents grew up on the continent, so maybe it was different where they were.

Laughing emojis get called a boomer thing by the Z and Alpha mind you. I'm sure you don't want to be associated with that!

FrenchandSaunders · 20/07/2024 09:30

I’m not quite in the boomer age group (56) but I wouldn’t dream of being so judgy and negative with my adult DDs. None of my business what they spend their money on 🤷🏼‍♀️

Maybe you should just shoot him then? Greedy old man using up the health care system he’s supported all his working life.

What fucking medical advances do you think you’ll see that he won’t? A cure for cancer? You’ll also benefit from medical advances. Unless of course, you’d like to deny yourself them as you don’t want to benefit from them.

What a stupid comment.
