What is this on my toddler? Itchy?!

My toddler has been very itchy this week. I've given her antihistamines each day (otherwise she'll just scratch and scratch). It's calmed down a bit but her skin feels a bit like sandpaper. It only seems to be on her trunk, rather than the extremities.

It may be a doctors visit after the weekend. But wondering does anyone have any suggestions at what it could be?

I've given antihistamines and put calamine lotion on. Nothing at home has changed, I did change her shampoo a while ago, but she's on the second bottle now (and it's just started this week), my laundry detergent has changed packaging (same stuff, but I'm wondering if there are any changes to the ingredients) but I can't think of anything else.

Sandpaper-like is typically scarlet fever. Mine had scarlet fever mildly with only really the rash. I wouldn't have known they had it if it hadn't been going round.

But I don't recall it being itchy. I was going to suggest shingles if she's had chicken pox/chicken pox jab, but it doesn't feel like sandpaper.

I was going to say shingles. It’s always shingles.

I hope whatever it is passes soon.

It looks like a hives type rash. What antihistamine did you try? Piriton can be more effective fof rashes.

Calamine can cause the skin to be dry so could need some moisturiser.

My DD gets heat rash that looks just like that. Lasts for days, unbearably itchy. I use an anti histamine cream which helps.

Always on her back too.

It is called Skin Calm. I bought it off Amazon. Your dc might be a bit young for it tho, so worth going to the GP to see if they can recommend something or give it on prescription.

Just checked and it’s a hydrocortisone cream.

Or ask a pharmacist to have a look.

thanks everyone. I've just had time to properly catch up with your messages.

It's probably just been a heat rash...but she's still itching, although not as bad. I used calamine lotion for a couple of days and have been using baby lotion since.

I'll persevere with the baby lotion and see how she gets on but if she's still itchy towards the end of the week I'll phone the doctors.
