Where to stay if I want to go to Bruton one day and Bristol the next

Hi there, just wanted to ask any SW MNers for some local advice. For DHs b'day weekend we are hoping to go to Hauser and Wirth gallery one day and Bristol the next, doesn't really matter which way round we do it.
We're looking for a hotel/BB where we can stay on Saturday night, somewhere in between. I know the traffic is usually bad in Bristol, so I thought we could leave London, drive to hotel, park and then get a train into Bristol, returning at the end of the day. We could then drive to Bruton Sunday morning.
The question is where to stay. Westbury seems to have good train service and looks central, but is there anywhere more sensible to stay? Bath would be expensive, and we're not looking for anywhere posh, would ideally not spend more than £150 for a family room. Also don't really want to be spending out on a lot of taxi fares either if possible.
Thanks in advance

Warminster has direct trains to Bristol also. Westbury doesn't really have much in the way of hotels to my knowledge

Warminster has a Travelodge just outside of town. There's also Hunters Moon and some B&B's in the pubs in town.

Bruton isn't far from Warminster either.

Thanks @Bobbydazz Really helpful 🙏

You can get a train into Bristol from Bradford on Avon, and it's a very pretty little place worth a potter while you're there, with a few restaurants etc.
I have no idea about places to stay there but I would imagine there are a few guest houses and b&bs.

The nicest place would probably be Wells although it doesn't have a train the Mendip Explorer to Bristol is a lovey bus ride. There is an ASK on the market square with lovely views over the moat and bishops palace and a sweet market if you are there on Saturday. The Swan Inn is lovely and has a terrace with an amazing view of the cathedral.

Frome would also be a good option. Direct train to Bristol and not too far from Bruton. I’m sure there’s a premier inn in frome or definitely some nice air b n bs. Also a lovely place to wander around x

Thanks everyone, much appreciated. We only have a weekend and not very long days, so I think a bus trip might take up too much time. I'll definitely have a look at Warminster though - that looks convenient.

I do love Frome, but not for this trip.
Thanks though.

  • drop dog off 7am Saturday am
  • drive to _____ hotel, park car
  • get train into Bristol - spend day looking around, having dinner.
  • train back to ___ hotel stay the night
  • go to Hauser and Wirth
  • drive back to London pick dog up 7pm
It's all a bit tight really, so location is the key

I live in Bristol. The traffic isn't great but it's fine, so I wouldn't worry about driving there. I would say that if you're not sure if your itinerary yet, the centre of Bristol isn't that nice. Better areas for pottering are Clifton Village, Park Street. St. Nick's Market is good though.

Bristol is a good place to stay.

A word of warning the gallery isn't very big and won't take a whole day. I went three weeks ago and even with lunch at the extortionate restaurant and a mooch around the farm shop it was 3 hours of the day so make sure you have a plan for the rest of your Bruton day.

The plan is to go around the gallery on the waterfront, and then have a walk around the town, DD will probably want to look at the shops too.
We went years ago and really liked it and will take your suggestions happily.

The waterfront area is really nice. If you want something for the evening you could also see what's on at The Old Vic and get a drink in the Old Duke (jazz pub) beforehand - it's a nice area of town and tickets aren't usually too pricey!

Yes, it's not huge is it, although I love the garden too. I imagine we'll be there for a few hours and then head home. Might try to swerve into the Toast outlet too though.

Maybe worth noting that Bristol has a ULEZ and certain vehicles have to pay (number-plate cameras at the edg of the zone).

As a guide, charges will not apply to:

Euro 4, 5 and 6 petrol vehicles, roughly 2006 upwards

Euro 6 diesel vehicles, roughly end of 2015 onwards

fully electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles

modified or retrofitted vehicles registered with the Energy Saving Trust's Clean Vehicle Retrofit Accreditation Scheme (CVRAS)

motorbikes

Bristol's Clean Air Zone charges and vehicle checker

Check if your vehicle will be charged and how much you'll have to pay. Over 71% of vehicles in Bristol are already compliant and so only a minority of veh

I grew up in Bruton and now live in Bristol.
If H&W doesn't take the whole day, I highly recommend The Newt, also in Bruton.
You have to buy a membership but it lasts a year if you plan to go back!

Thank you for this - luckily our car is London ULEZ zone compliant, so we should be fine...

Small update - we drove to Bristol and spent the afternoon down by the waterfront Arnolfini for lunch (delicious but service slow) and and up by the Cathedral, checked into the Holiday Inn Express by Temple Meads station, and then went out to dinner at Franco Manca - (delicious) and a film at the Watershed. Next morning after a wonderful breakfast, we went to Hauser and Wirth to see the Barlow show and the wonderful garden, and a wander around Frome which was mostly shut. Lunch at the Grape and Grain and then home. All in all a lovely weekend - thanks for all of your help - Bristol is a wonderful place.
