Spinach in bolognese sauce will it be awful

Shartuday · 19/07/2024 16:39

I’m filling the freezer and am trying to make complete meals. If I add spinach to bolognese sauce will it be horrible. It’s just for me so doesn’t have to be child friendly. Am making a load of it so don’t want to ruin it. Thanks

it will be utterly tasteless and won’t impact flavour at all

possibly might feel a little like something slippery in your mouth though!

but go for it

pizzaHeart · 19/07/2024 16:41

it’s fine, I used to do this to top up DD’s iron intake.

RookieMa · 19/07/2024 16:42

I wouldn't

It'll be fine taste-wise but it will make the sauce a weird colour!

NeverDropYourMooncup · 19/07/2024 16:42

Chop it finely, don't bother cooking it first as it'll cook through during reheating, maybe add a bit extra sweetness from a good squirt of tomato puree and it'll be fine (and not slimy at all).

BobbyBiscuits · 19/07/2024 16:44

Unless it's about to go off I wouldn't bother before freezing. It's better to add it right at the last minute during heating as it requires hardly any cooking. It has virtually no taste so it won't do any harm, just adds some colour and vitamins.

Shartuday · 19/07/2024 16:49

Thanks everyone. Much appreciated. Will stick some in there at the end !

I wouldn't particularly like it due to the texture - for upping veg content I'd be inclined to add grated courgette and/or lentils instead (green lentils would be my preference).

AzureAnt · 19/07/2024 16:54

It's fine. I have some.frozen chopped spinach leaf in my freezer and I chuck it in allsorts of meals 😋

MouseofCommons · 19/07/2024 16:57

It'll be fine. I add kale to everything at the end of cooking for the bonus dark leafy veg vitamins.

CouncilEstate · 19/07/2024 17:01

I’ve done it before it’s absolutely fine- doesn’t change the taste but massive clumps can be a bit slimy texture wise.
Id blend it into your chopped tomatoes (will make the sauce a weird colour though) or just chop it up as small as possible.

As a side note I do always blend lots of veg into a tomato sauce (for fussy kids but obviously adults eat it too!) like peppers, carrots, courgette etc. Almost anything in the fridge that needs using up asap.
It helps get lots of veg into all of us.
I keep a load of it in the freezer, and then when making a bolognese I brown the mince etc and then add it in.

JC03745 · 19/07/2024 17:01

I often add grated carrot and courgette to my bolognese. I agree that the spinach would need to be chopped fine, otherwise it tends to lump together.
If you are trying to add more veg, you could also substitute a layer of pasta with layers of thinly cut sweet potato, potato, courgette, aubergine etc. Definitely not traditional, but cuts carbs and adds fibre and veg.

Shartuday · 19/07/2024 17:09

Great. Im whizzing up the sauce so will whizz the spinach in too.

Press the spinach in a sieve to get rid of excess water, or you'll have a very watery sauce.

veritusvarity · 19/07/2024 18:21

Oops, may have been too late with the advice, hope it all went well OP.

Katypp · 19/07/2024 18:32

NOTHING that has been spoken about on this thread is Bolognaise!
Why add random veg to a classic ragu?
Call it something different!

Shartuday · 19/07/2024 18:35

Katypp. You’re right. It’s bolognese-ish now. It’s worked out fine thanks everyone

bolognese with spinach?

does that calm you down?

Bjorkdidit · 19/07/2024 18:51

Why would you do it, especially as it's not normally in the recipe anyway and you're worried it will be weird?

There's loads of veg in bolognese anyway (carrots, onions, celery, tomatoes), so no need for any more.

veg to use up

Coastalcreeksider · 19/07/2024 18:56

I made a chilli earlier and put spinach in it with mushrooms as well. Really bulks it out and I like it. I put it in bolognese and curries too.

PickAChew · 19/07/2024 18:56

I do it often. I season the spinach before I stir it in, though.

Alternatively, I might serve some broccoli, fresh or frozen, or sweetheart cabbage on the side. I do like some greens with a meal, even if it already has a lot of other veg.

Heartbreaktuna · 19/07/2024 19:38

I've done it but found even the smallest amounts really dilute the sauce
