Is there anyway to separate a king-size bed down the middle?

I'm due to have an operation soon. The recovery is quite brutal, 6-8 weeks.

I'm worrying about sharing a bed with DH as he has restless legs and night terrors. I usually wake him up/twll him to STFU but during recovery I really feel like if he kicks me I could get hurt.

Because it's 2 months I don't feel like it's fair to ask DH to sleep on our (really uncomfortable) couch.

Any ideas?

He can buy a blow up mattress if the sofa’s uncomfortable. Surely he doesn’t want to risk hurting you, he’d feel awful presumably if he did accidentally.

what's your budget. My immediate reaction is do as the Germans do: separate mattresses. And separate quilts/duvets.

Do you have space where you could sleep for the duration (spare room or something?)

Redcrayons · 19/07/2024 10:57

Mine has two single mattresses, it’s sits within a bed frame so they don’t slide off. Appreciate that this is a costly workaround, but if you like it you could make it permanent.

Hoppinggreen · 19/07/2024 10:59

Pool noodle or similar, I think you might be able to buy something that is meant to keep young children from falling out of bed.
Then swap duvet for 2 singles as well
Hope it all goes well and best of luck for your recovery

The classical German (and Swedish) approach actually is two twins side-by-side.

A toddler is very useful for this but could result in both adults getting pummeled.

meh. Not my experience. (I've lived in Germany since the 60s)
It is often (and these days most often) one big bed frame, with separate "lattenrost" (the frame bit the mattress lies on) that can often be tilted up so you can sit and read, and a single mattress on each side by side. This is great if you have different mattress requirements/wishes.

2 Duvets is often a game changer for people, even with a double/queen/king/super king sized mattress

No spare room/bed

There is room in here for a single bed but I don't really want to spend hundreds just for s few months use.

I actually looked into hiring an electric bed to make it easier for me to but it's so expensive!

Dreams inflatable bed is actually v good. They do a single for £80

caffelattetogo · 19/07/2024 12:09

Any secondhand electric beds in your local facebook marketplace? We sold one for a relative on there for £50 just to be rid of it. Or pick up a cheap single bed on there?

TheFlis · 19/07/2024 12:12

In similar circumstances a friend rolled up a line of pillows in a duvet cover to make a wall down the middle of the bed.

FinallyHere · 19/07/2024 12:12

A bolster of the sort used in yoga done the centre sounds as if it might do the trick.

And, yes, your own duvet. We have two double duvets on a superking mattress.

Bliss, only downside is how expensive it is to recreate when on holiday.

Something like this might help? They probably sell elsewhere too.

CelesteCunningham · 19/07/2024 12:15

You need to prioritise your recovery, he'll live. I'd get a good air bed for him and he can choose between that and the sofa.

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 19/07/2024 12:18

I’d get the inflatable bed, you can get a decent single for under £100 and probably resell it for £50/60 with such minimal use
