DS staying in shared hostel dorms, what does he need to know?

He's had a terrible few years, and I'm really pleased that he's found the motivation to organise this trip for himself.

He's hiking in some remoter parts of UK and staying in youth hostels.

He knows about mountain safety, route planning and navigation, but what does he need to know to be happy, comfortable and safe in the hostels?

keep noise to a minimum between 10-6.
keep his pack in the designated spot.
take ear plugs
if he wants to make friends used the shared kitchen.
take a travel towel.
take a bed bug liner.

Oh take a combination lock? Some people like to keep their passport on them to sleep and get this little bags. I haven’t.

Be respectful of your fellow residents - make as little noise as possible if people are sleeping, take a torch so you don't need to switch a big light on (some have little bedside lights), keep your kit tidy and packed away or hung up.
Take flip flops or sliders in case the showers look grubby and to wear around the hostel. I think hostels are pretty safe and don't attract the sort of people who are looking to cause trouble or steal things but a bit of common sense around keeping valuables on his person or out of sight won't go amiss. There's often a locker per bunk that can be padlocked so a small lock would probably be useful.

Don’t leave a mess in the communal kitchen

Be respectful of others in terms of remaining modestly clothed. Particularly in a shared sex sleeping form, don’t put women in the position of having to look away or feel unsafe.

Smell nice! Deodorant, wash hsir and non-smelly clothes. In small shared spaces, it is impossible to get away from body odours. Stale sweat, and breaking wind are not needed.
