Would you travel for a nhs dentist ?

My local dentist (10 mins drive ) has now gone private.
They are not offering nhs anymore
I rang lots of dentists and managed to find one taking on.
The only thing is it's a 40 min drive away.
I had my checkup today and need 2 fillings
They can do them in a fortnight
Thing is the journey is hard as I don't drive so need to get the bus which can take 50 mins to 1 hour
Would you travel for this dentist ?
Or do I just join the local practice plan but obviously have to pay the prices

Yes!

I would.

We do - our dentist went fully private & dropped all their NHS patients. We were very lucky to find one and the same county but it's a 40min drive away. We make a day of it, all 4 of us have our appointments back to back & go twice a year. It's a pain but so much cheaper.

@APurpleSquirrel yeah this one is Newcastle city centre so I'm telling myself I can make it a shopping day or lunch before appointment

DH and I are currently travelling 2hrs each way to our old dentist! We can stay locally, and will eventually move to a private place closer to our new home. DH is having specialist treatment and having had dreadful treatment elsewhere in the past, are reluctant to change to someone new unless absolutely necessary.

FuzzyPuffling · 18/07/2024 20:47

We travel 1.5 hrs to get to our old nhs dentist.
The nearest one to our new house that is accepting nhs patients is a 3 hr drive away, so we feel fortunate.

Yes. Mine is an hour’s drive/walk away. PITA, but not as much as paying for private dentistry.

Every six months I travel by train from London where I live to a northern city so I can go to the same dentist who has looked after my teeth for 36 years. He was my local dentist for about twenty years before I moved south. It had nothing to do with NHS problems when I started - I have a thing about dental work, and I know and trust this chap, so it’s a little less traumatic for me.

The same dentist looked after all my children and now cares for my grandchildren.

CraazyCatLady · 18/07/2024 21:19

My dentist is 3+ hours away. It's annoying having to go that far, especially with kids (4 & 1) but there are no NHS dentists in my area, so sticking with the one from where we used to live. It's cheaper to drive all that way and stay in a hotel than it is to go private.
I would love to go to a dentist that's only 40 minutes away!

TragicMuse · 18/07/2024 23:20

There's not a single NHS dentist taking on adult patients in my whole county. I'll have to travel if I find one in any neighbouring counties...

MrsSkylerWhite · 18/07/2024 23:26

Hell yes!
phoned 37 dentist practices in a 50 mile circumference to try to sign our student son up a couple of years ago.
A 40 minute journey is nothing!

caringcarer · 18/07/2024 23:28

Of course I would and 40 minutes is nothing.
