Moving Somewhere Warm

Hi. I have got to the point where I can't function in the awful winter weather.

I've been looking into moving abroad. I am 50 and can't get an Australian visa. It looks like it is expensive to live in Gibraltar. I work in admin. Thanks

Any suggestions about where I could move to

Canary Islands, mainland Spain, Italy, Greece, Egypt, Turkey, Florida...etc. Also, Gibraltar is not at all expensive, if it is out of your budget, you'd struggle to afford to live in any other location..

Separately, I'd like to applaud you for deciding to leave, sick of posts recently with people whining about the weather and everything else but doing nothing about it.

Eyesopenwideawake · 18/07/2024 17:32

Do you have an EU passport? If not you'll sadly be limited as to where you can move to, unless you can prove an ongoing income.

BouncyPink · 18/07/2024 17:33

I’d totally move to Spain, France or Italy in a heartbeat if I could all because of this godawful weather! Good on you!!

getmeoutofhereagain · 18/07/2024 17:35

@Ghost2 thank you. I looked at flat rental prices in Gibraltar and they seemed quite pricey.

I just have a UK passport unfortunately

Unfortunately unless you have a job/ accommodation you cannot now stay more than is allowed.
90 days
What is the Schengen 90/180 rule? Under the terms of Schengen, non-EEA nationals cannot spend more than a total of 90 days within a total period of 180 days without a visa. Furthermore, once you've used up your quota of 90 days, you cannot return to Schengen until 90 more days have passed.

I have a villa in The Canaries.
Most we stay is a month at a time.. but usually shorter stays.
But the climate has changed and we have had a lot of rain and cold days these last few years than previously.
I let my family use it

Admin in an ngo or UN in Africa English speaking country?

CalicoPusscat · 18/07/2024 17:56

It's rubbish isn't it? I have my coat over my knees then realised it's only July

Moonlaserbearwolf · 18/07/2024 17:57

Love the idea of an ‘oldies’ gap year. Very tempting.

Eyesopenwideawake · 18/07/2024 17:57

Workaway is a great way of travelling on a budget. I've hosted over 250 volunteers in the last 14 years - the youngest was 17, the oldest 67!

EnjoythemoneyJane · 18/07/2024 18:04

What about house-sitting? I know a couple in their 50s who are currently travelling all over the place, staying for free in other people’s houses. They’re intending to do it for a year before deciding where they want to settle, as it’s a great way to check out different locations and live like a local for a bit, without having to fully commit to a big move. And you may find some places are less expensive to live in than you might think, as rent is offset by cheaper food, transport, etc.

MagpiePi · 18/07/2024 18:07

I'm another one who would love to move somewhere warm.

I think that apart from living costs you have to consider the culture and community you would be moving into. It's never going to be the same as being there on holiday.

My son lived in Australia for 2 years and even though they speak the same language and they have an English based culture, he found it more difficult than he expected to be fully accepted. If you throw in a different language and say, a southern mediterranean culture, then it may not be easy.

getmeoutofhereagain · 18/07/2024 18:13

@MagpiePi - I know what you mean. I had Australian connections when I was younger. I'm now too old to get a visa

Same 😢

Renting in Gibraltar is the same price as renting London. So it is expensive although water bills and electricity bills are cheaper and there is no council tax.

Bohomovies · 04/09/2024 21:08

I also recommend you look into house sitting. I know someone who house sits for dogs and he has travelled all over, including Spain, South Africa, Turkey. Then you get to stay places for free (and could even air bnb your property while you travel?)
