Have you ever stolen anything?

This is I guess sparked by the thread about the friend taking glasses but I don't want to derail it! All of the responses have been so shocked and severe... all cut her off this is unthinkable.

But it just reminds me of an incident when I was 17-18 where I did steal £30 from a friend. I of course accept now that it was unjustifiable but I had ways to justify it in my head at the time - I was annoyed at her, she was much richer and flash with her money, she was careless and wouldn't even notice the money was missing, she'd messed up my evening (she'd got into a state on a night out and I'd taken her home - which I now realise makes it even worse in that I took advantage of her vulnerability, god that bit still makes me feel a bit sick that she was probably grateful the next morning I was there to look after her), she'd been a bit lax in paying me back for something else because money just wasn't a big deal to her. I felt really bad in the aftermath - I probably spent most of it buying her drinks! And even now when I treat her to something I think about it sometimes.

I've grown into an adult who is scrupulously honest (I think actually more so than some people I know). I wouldn't dream of doing something similar now. But then again I also have plenty of money now so I'm not tested in the same way - I feel confident that I wouldn't do something like it though even if I was on my uppers. I'm so grateful that she never found out as 15 years on I feel confident in saying it was a momentary lapse. We've got such a close friendship and been there for each other through thick and thin. I always had less money than my peer group and I had a moment of weakness after a few drinks.

So, I'd be interested to know if anyone has anyone done similar? I guess I'm struggling to believe that I'm the absolute minority in having done something so utterly shameful like that... maybe I am?!

when I was 15 my best friend was a hardcore shoplifter, I dreaded going to town with her, she'd go into boots with an empty tote bag and leave with it bulging, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't jealous of all the stuff she would get but I knew it was wrong and I was terrified of my mums wrath so I never did it myself, one day she was basically peer pressuring me but I take accountability for the fact I made the action, but she convinced me to take an eye brow pencil and I did it, I put it up my sleeve.

never did it again it made me feel like the scum of the earth, were 30 now and she is so ashamed she used to do that. But her mum was weird and made her buy her own food shopping/ makeup toiletries and clothes out of her child maintenance (which was about £40 a week at the time) it was enough so she did resort to stealing

BouncyPink · 18/07/2024 16:30

I do. Never did as a child but do now as an adult. Bedding from hotels (their customer service was crap), pair of knickers from Victoria’s Secret (I did the buy 5 for price of 4 or whatever but wanted an extra pair). I don’t know why I do it!! It’s surprisingly really easy and I don’t feel guilty. I’m literally the most boring and somewhat vanilla person ever as well. DH thinks I’m weird!

armyofmice · 18/07/2024 16:30

DH did the self scan at Ikea (the original first one in Sweden), the screen went black at the end of scanning and a staff member restarted it or something. All fine and he paid with her standing next to him.

Half way home DH said he couldn’t believe how cheap Ikea was, could I guess how much it all was. I did a fair estimate as I knew what I had put in the trolley, but he said oh no nowhere near that amount.

We had basically paid for 20% of it. 😳

when I was homeless I stole from International supermarket as I was so desperate for food

Flowers

I'm so sorry that happened to you.

Thank you. All water under the bridge now. I felt really guilty and ashamed about my stealing phase for a long time, but looking back, it was clearly acting out of emotional turmoil. Doesn't make it okay, and I still feel terrible when I think about it, but I can forgive myself and it's ultimately made me a very honest and trustworthy person.

FastFood · 18/07/2024 17:43

Willingly, no.
Accidentally, twice:

A Smurf figurine in a supermarket when I was 5, my mum told me I could have it whilst we were doing shopping but I forgot to put it on the conveyor belt and just left the supermarket with the Smurf in my hand. My mum wasn't impressed but she was also tired so we just went back home.

Very recently, I did the usual thing when I go to Coop "just for milk" and I finally end up buying 10 items, but I'm too lazy to go back to the entrance to grab a basket. So I was holding a pint of milk with my pinky and didn't notice it.
I considered going back for one second but guess what, I didn't have a shopping bag so I was still precariously holding on my shopping so I just left.

Oh and otherwise plenty of series, films, mp3s, Adobe licenses etc...
So yes I guess I'm a seasoned criminal.

MonsteraMama · 18/07/2024 17:48

Stole a wok from Tesco once when I was a teenager. Don't really remember why, it seemed funny at the time.

Definitely got a few pint glasses. I've still got a really nice square black whiskey tumbler that I got from some bar somewhere.

I'd never steal from a friend though. It just seems so much worse.

Singersong · 18/07/2024 17:51

I have a vivid memory from when I was a child, maybe 6 years old. I went to M&S with my parents, picked up some sort of card game as we were going around and walked out with it. I was so scared that the police would come chasing after me that I threw it in the bin on the way back to the car park.

Nobodywouldknow · 18/07/2024 14:30

Yes I’ve stolen quite substantial amounts of money from employers and acquaintances. I’m very good at appearing honest and trustworthy so I have never been suspected. I suspect I have a personality disorder because I don’t feel guilt either.

I would love to know more about this @Nobodywouldknow. How did you do it?

Also, what makes you think you have a personality disorder? It's telling that you haven't stolen from friends or family - not that this means you don't' have a PD, but it's a different thing to hurting those who love us and feeling nothing.

lljkk · 18/07/2024 18:00

Not counting the copyrighted digital items...

When I was a kid (< 13yo), yes, quite a bit.

As an adult, a few times I have lost patience with self-checkout & just shrugged if something didn't/refused to register or scan.

Sethera · 18/07/2024 18:03

Fairly sure not, unless it was without realising. I lie sometimes but I don't steal, and I point out things like being given the wrong change in a shop.

This conversation came up with DH the other day. Not so much as a pick & mix sweet or a strawberry at the pick your own farm.

I don't steal but evidently I do lie! Sparked by the people who've stolen glasses from bars, I've got a couple of napkins from a restaurant that's special to DH and I.

Onlywayisupmaybe · 18/07/2024 18:20

Never stolen anything in my life.
I’d like to do some shoplifting to see if I could get away with it. My life is a bit of a mess at the moment

Ghost2 · 18/07/2024 18:22

I once ate from the pick 'n' mix in Woolworths when I was about 7, didn't actually buy anything

thequickbrowndog · 18/07/2024 18:24

I was shocked and pretty disgusted to hear my 21 year old niece boasting about all the clothes she has stolen from shops. Her response was "why should I pay for it?" Needless to say she won't be left unattended at my house anymore!

StripedPiggy · 18/07/2024 18:35

I accidentally stole a copy of the Sunday Times from Tesco. I walked in, picked up a basket, grabbed the paper & tucked it under my arm. I then grabbed whatever else I wanted, put it in the basket, went to the checkout, unloaded the basket, paid & walked back to my car. With the paper still tucked under my arm.

25thCenturyQuaker · 18/07/2024 18:38

As an adult, no. As a child, yes. When I was at primary school, my lovely, trusting headmaster decided I was responsible enough to help run the (tiny) school tuck shop. God forgive me, but I used to rob the place regularly. A sixpence out of the cash drawer here, a packet of peanuts there....

Still don't know why, never did it before or since, never got found out.

TwoBlueFish · 18/07/2024 18:41

A haircut age 17 (haircut was done downstairs, pay desk upstairs, waited ages and nobody appeared so I left)
a pack of hair grips that I shoplifted at about age 12.

C0rdeliaChase · 18/07/2024 18:42

Stole a lipstick from Boots when I was 14.

Incakewetrust · 18/07/2024 18:45

libertybonds · 18/07/2024 14:11

Not that I can recall

May sound like virtue signalling, but this morning I went to a shop and paid for something they forgot to charge me for last week

Honestly is extremely important to me as a personal value

I've done that a couple of times 😂

Incakewetrust · 18/07/2024 18:46

In reception, I was 4 and I took all of the pennies out of the play shopping till and took them home. My mum drove me straight back to school and I cried from embarrassment. I've never taken anything since 🙈

Strawbsss · 18/07/2024 18:52

Yes.

Years ago my child had horrendous colic.

Doctors couldn't prescribe Coleif to help and I just couldn't go another day with the screaming.

I remember I had just £2.31 in my account.

I went into the supermarket, picked up a bottle and tucked it in the hood of my pram.

I remember feeling the relief as I walked home that I could get some respite from my screaming child.

I was definitely clocked on cctv as the next time I went in the security pointed me out.

I've never done it since as I've fortunately not been in such a bad way financially... id been diagnosed with PN Depression around the same time and I think I was just desperate to not feel so low around my baby. I didn't care if I got caught at the time.

I feel guilty now x

Crushedcandy · 18/07/2024 18:57

I was going to say no I’ve never stolen anything until I saw pub glasses mentioned. I’ve got a few in my kitchen cupboard that I’ve had for 50 odd years 😱

I felt sad recently when I realised my son was here for the weekend and used one one of the pint glasses then put it in the dishwasher. It almost completely washed off the Ansells Bitter logo. I think that company has been defunct for over 40 years. I’ve had the glass for 50 years 🍻

UltramarineViolet · 18/07/2024 18:57

I went through a phase of shoplifting when I was around 19/20, it probably lasted about 6 months and I mainly stole low value items such as toiletries, stationery and confectionary

Looking back I struggle to give any kind of explanation for why i did it and ultimately I stopped due to fear of being caught and the shame it would bring
