I'm surprised this situation has been allowed to continue

But also not sure what could be done.

It's all fact, I know the people involved very well.

Headteacher of a large school, whilst married with young DC, had an affair with his deputy head. She fell pregnant, he divorced his (now ex) wife and married the deputy. They now have a baby and he remains her boss.

Where I work one, or (more likely) both would have been transferred to other posts/offices, but not so easy in a schol. Is it really appropriate that they remain in post, and that all the staff, who witnessed it all, are led by pair?

As long as its not breaching any local policies, crack on. Nobodys business but theirs.

Conflict of interest obviously.

Similiar in my workplace

It happens...nobody really cares anymore

Happened in my DD's school 20 years ago, when DD was about 8 or 9. Head teacher (male 44 single) had an affair with a married mum of 3 children who was a teacher there - (she had 2 boys, 1 girl. All went to the school.)

She was 35, and left her husband of 15 years for him. 6 months into the affair, and just 7 months after meeting the head teacher. (He was new at the school, she had been there 5 years.) She took the kids and moved into the headteacher's big 4 bed cottage. Her husband was in a good job and she wanted for nothing. It shocked the community to the core, as she and her husband and 3 kids seemed like this perfect little family.

The woman and the headmaster are 55 and 64 now and still together. Had 2 kids together, now both in their early to mid teens. (So she had 5 altogether.)

But they both kept their jobs! (Changed schools after 3 years as they all moved away to a town 20 miles away. She stayed as a teacher though, and he stayed as a headteacher.)

Wouldn't have been allowed in most places I've worked. The situation would have been "managed" - probably by relocating the woman to another role elsewhere or out.

I've almost always worked in private sector though.

I don't think having an affair is reason to be sacked, I am surprised a married couple are allowed to form the leadership of a school, and having aired their dirty linen the way they have, I'd be amazed if they're able to manage staff effectively.

I think the affair is a red herring. It's shitty behaviour, but it's not a crime.

But the resultant husband/wife head/deputy situation sounds appalling to me. I'm really shocked that this has been permitted, it sounds like a recipe for nepotism to me. I think it places the rest of the SLT in an extremely difficult situation.

That's what I think, I'd hate to work under those conditions, but really, what action is open to the governors?

I think a LOT of people were shocked when they got to stay at the school, and carry on as normal! Pretty disgusting to be quite honest. He was bad enough, but I don't know how SHE had the brass neck to face people after leaving her husband and breaking up her family, to carry on her affair with the head teacher!

Her husband was absolutely crushed, and didn't see it coming at all. He had to see them together most days until they left the area, and see them at the school when he went to see his kids there (or pick them up.) He didn't even get a say in the kids being taken away to a place 20 miles away, and changing schools.

The secondary school my son went to has a wife head teacher and a husband deputy head teacher, no affair involved they met each other in the workplace like lots of couples do ( just happened to be in a school). I had no issue with it as a parent and a friend of mine who is a teacher in the school has no problem with it either.
I’m old enough to remember teachers who preyed on their pupils, one such teacher left the school married a 17 yr old ex pupil and went to teach in another school, now that I had a problem with.

I agree with you. No it's not appropriate. Report to governors.
