My cat escaped

We got a rescue cat 4 days ago. He seemed to be settling in well. However, we had a netting over the back door and he's somehow managed to escape outside and somehow get out of our supposedly cat proof garden. DH immediately went searching and found him about 100 meters away. Before he could catch him, the cat spooked and has run away out of sight.

The cat is chipped, neutered, healthy, but clearly in a strange area and is unlikely to find his way home. He could be up to half a mile away hiding. We're going to inform the charity we adopted him from and keep looking. We're also going to post something on the local site.

I feel pretty guilty. I believed we had cat proofed and we hadn't. We've let down a senior cat who's already been through a hard time. We wanted to give him a good home, and we've fucked up. I'm not sure what to do for the best.

It‘a normal. Cats instinct is to get out and roam about.

My indoor cat got out a couple of weeks ago and we didn't find him for ten days! There is a lot of good advice on how to look for escaped cats online. What worked for us was posting on social media, putting up posters, and door knocking. We also hired a humane trap but that didn't work as he was a few streets away. We also went out at 3AM with torches and looked for him, as we knew he was likely to be scared and hiding. I hope you find him soon, my idiot is snoring at my feet now and very happy to be home.

Can you put out a bowl of food in garden and call his name from time to time. He may venture back slowly.

Cats are smart so I wouldn’t just give up on him and panic! I assume he’s been using a litter tray as he’s not been able to go outside (until now). I would get the litter tray and move the used litter about (maybe get an another tray and tip it between the two trays). Chances are he’s not too far away and he might smell it and it may lure him back. This always used to work to get my cat back in when she was being a pain and staying out all night.

Unbelievably he has just walked back in. Absolute prick for worrying us like that. Making sure the house is like Fort Knox now.

I'm so pleased he's back!

Ah that's brilliant! So happy for you!

caringcarer · 17/07/2024 01:49

Glad he's come home now. I was going to suggest you put his litter tray outside as he'd smell it

You are so lucky… I had almost the exact same situation this week. Picked up rescue cat on Sunday and she got out, got spooked and ran away. Only she hasn’t come back.

I feel exactly the same regarding letting the cat down, letting who I adopted her down.

So glad for your happy ending x

ricecrispiecakes · 17/07/2024 07:29

When you say you've cat-proofed, what do you mean? Have you installed proper cat proof fencing etc?

I'm glad he came back but I suspect now he's been out he's going to want to keep going out, so if you're not happy with him roaming then I'd triple check your boundaries!

Very pleased your wanderer has returned OP.

Sone years ago a friend took in a stray she found in a car park who had clearly been living rough for a while. Cat was a big black complete Tom, war torn ears and an untreated abscess. She took him to the vet got his abscess treated, his bits removed and chipped.
Despite being friendly he broke out of their house that night by moving a crate of beer put in front of the cat flap (😮) and breaking open the locked cat flap to escape. He returned about 36 hours later , demanding food and attention, having clearly surveyed his new neighbourhood and decided he was onto a good thing. Never went awol again.
