Do I have to much stuff to live in a new build house

We are currently looking to move house. I have been looking at new builds but where do people put their stuff? Or do I have an unusual amount of stuff?

We have a Christmas tree and some Christmas decorations, a couple of suitcases, some camping chairs and a tent. Which doesn't seem an unusually large amount of stuff to need to store but it literally wouldn't fit in any of the new builds we have looked at unless we maybe gave up wearing clothes and put them in the wardrobes instead.

And if anyone has a way of buying a 3 bedroom house where the 3rd bedroom isn't a box and you can actually store stuff and it doesnt cost a fortune please let me know.

NB I'm shocked about the space in the average 3 bed rebuild. Our rental property is a 1950s ex council house and has an enormous garage and loft, plus a very large garden so room for outbuildings. We looked at new builds as well, but they were tiny, which is why we bought that one.

@GrannyRose15 That is my biggest fear about down sizing . Modern new builds that are desirable for low maintenance don't seem to have realistic storage options . On Rightmove I look at these minimalistic rooms and think about where do you put your winter coats , your blankets , toilet rolls ..

My flat is a bit useless for storage, only 2 drawers in the kitchen and bottom cupboards are inaccessible.
I do have an almost triangular cupboard in the hall, supposed to be an airing cupboard but as there's anywhere to put stuff I keep all the camping gear/cat boxes/car stuff in there( no garden)
What helps is there's a shelf about 5ft up so all the camping chairs and tents slide up there and are held in place by each other and the wall so don't fall out, so using the space right at the top brilliantly, not sure it was designed for this but it works!

My new build has loads of storage - under stairs, airing cupboard, another full height cupboard, loft space that I don't use and a garage which is full of stuff. I think maybe new builds are not all the same. Can you look at a different builder?

Those new builds look so pretty but they have nowhere near the substance of older homes, do they?
I live in an ex council property, built in the 1950s, and there is a useful garden and decent spaces within the house.
Even the flats in our road have a little garden with a brick shed, and a lockable storage space for each flat, in the lobby. They really were designed well and for people to actually live and thrive in.

I have that stuff you describe, and it fits under my bed - with the gazebo. Get a bed with a bit of storage space beneath it

Our new build has an under stairs cupboard, a large cupboard on the main floor and room in each bedroom for fitted wardrobes. We added a shed and boarded the loft. Definitely more than enough space for the stuff you listed.

Our house is a townhouse so we have a smaller than average loft (as the third/top bedroom is built into the roof) but definitely still more than enough space for everything you listed.

We have a fully boarded loft 2 double bedrooms and a large master bedroom. They do exist, anyway we have a garage

Invisimamma · 17/07/2024 09:03

Xmas tree and suitcases in the loft and camping stuff in the garage. If you have neither it maybe isn't the house for you. Unusual not have either, is there a big airing cupboard or similar?

We have automan beds that we can store loads of stuff underneath.
